The Regional University Hospital of Málaga has held a day dedicated to breast cancer, coinciding with World Breast Cancer Day. The event focused on the importance of comprehensive care and emotional support for patients, highlighting the coordination between different healthcare specialties.
Objectives of the Day
The meeting took place in the auditorium of the Materno Infantil Hospital, in collaboration with the Association of Women Operated for Breast Cancer (ASAMMA). Professionals from the sector, patients, and family members gathered to learn about the work of the teams involved in the treatment of breast cancer.
The day was inaugurated by Jesús Díaz, Deputy Medical Director of Citizen Care at the hospital, and Álvaro Montesa, Head of the Medical Oncology Service. During the event, the care pathway for women diagnosed with this disease was presented through the functioning of the hospital's Breast Committee.
Interventions and Activities
The Breast Committee brings together a multidisciplinary team that evaluates each case and establishes personalised treatments, considering the needs of each patient. During the day, specialists in oncology, radiodiagnosis, pathological anatomy, gynaecology, and breast surgery presented their roles in the care process, from cancer detection to post-treatment follow-up.
Among the professionals who participated were Francisco Carabantes and Lucía Garrido from Medical Oncology; Maite Hidalgo from Radiodiagnosis; and Javier Montoya from Radiotherapy Oncology. The testimony of a patient was also included, who shared her experience and the care received.
The day offered additional activities, such as a musical performance by a volunteer from ASAMMA and a mindfulness session led by psychologist Rosa María Fernández. This session focused on emotional well-being and provided tools to face challenges during the illness.
The event, presented by María Victoria Murillo, head of Citizen Participation, also emphasised the relevance of patient associations, which complement medical care and support women in their health decision-making process.
