The Education Minister of Andalusia, María del Carmen Castillo, has assured that the school menus in the community are safe, healthy, and nutritious. This service caters to around 188,000 children in 2,056 educational centres.
Control and quality in school canteens
Castillo highlighted that the menus are subject to controls by the Ministry of the Presidency, Health and Emergencies, and the Andalusian Public Agency for Education (APAE). The quality and safety of the meals are a priority, and in the event of incidents, control mechanisms are implemented and reinforced.
The detected incidents are isolated and not widespread. In cases where anomalies have been recorded, files have been opened and appropriate measures have been taken. Castillo wanted to reassure families about food safety, emphasizing that the incidents are related to contract violations.
Improvement measures for affected canteens
In any situation, the Ministry requires companies to have a plan to reinforce quality controls. This plan includes increased supervision, an increase in portion sizes, and menu reviews, as well as tastings organised with families.
During this school year, 60.7% of Andalusian families using the canteen service receive some form of discount, and 36.4% enjoy total free meals. The management of these canteens adapts to the needs of students and families, combining management models that ensure the same hygienic, sanitary, and nutritional guarantees.
The minister concluded that school menus in Andalusia are an essential tool for family reconciliation and emphasized the government's commitment to ensuring the quality and safety of these services.
