The traditional land and sea procession of the Virgin of Carmen in Nerja gathered thousands of faithful on July 16, on a day that has been declared a Provincial Tourist Singular Festival this year.
The Virgin of Carmen was once again the main protagonist on July 16 in Nerja, where thousands of people took to the streets to accompany the patroness of fishermen in her annual procession. The day, marked by emotion and tradition, took on a special character this year following the recent declaration of the festivity as Provincial Tourist Singular Festival by the Málaga Provincial Council.
The image made its way through the main streets of the municipality amidst applause, salutes, and a shower of petals thrown by the faithful. As tradition dictates, the Virgin was embarked on the beach of La Torrecilla, from where the maritime procession began along the Nerja coastline. The procession sailed to the beach of Calahonda, where it disembarked to continue on foot.
A Route that Connects Land and Sea
After disembarking, the land procession resumed its path towards the iconic Balcón de Europa, one of the most symbolic points of the route. From there, the procession headed to the Iglesia de El Salvador, where the image was received with a solemn mass. The day culminated with a fireworks display that lit up the sky of Nerja, closing one of the most anticipated events of the summer on the Costa del Sol.
The mayor of Nerja, José Alberto Armijo, attended the procession accompanied by members of the Municipal Corporation and other authorities. Armijo congratulated the Brotherhood of the Virgin of Carmen and its Brother Major, Daniel Rodríguez, for organizing the event. "This celebration is one of the most cherished traditions of our town and brings together thousands of people every year," the mayor highlighted.
More Events Until Saturday
The programming in honour of the Virgin of Carmen does not end with the procession. Until Saturday, the Plaza de los Cangrejos will host various activities for all audiences. Among them, the Maritime Market, where handcrafted products can be purchased, and the traditional Moraga Popular, a gastronomic event that brings together locals and tourists around grilled sardines. The grand finale will be the much-anticipated concert by Las Carlotas, which promises to liven up the summer nights in the municipality.
The declaration of the festivity as a Provincial Tourist Singular Festival represents recognition of the deep-rooted nature of this tradition in Nerja and an impetus for the town's tourist promotion. Attendees, both locals and visitors, positively valued the festive atmosphere and the organization of the event, which once again demonstrated the devotion of the people of Nerja to their patroness.
