Nerja boasts endless beaches, but its most authentic spots are found in coves of less than 100 meters. El Salón, El Chorrillo and La Caletilla are the locals' favorites for their intimate atmosphere and proximity to the historic centre.

When the average tourist arrives in Nerja, their first instinct is to seek out Burriana or the sand by the Balcón de Europa. But those who live here year-round know that the true essence of the Nerja coastline lies in the small coves, those that barely appear in guides and are hidden among cliffs and passages. There, the Mediterranean gently slips in, the noise of sun loungers disappears, and time seems to slow down.

Three of these coves — El Salón, El Chorrillo and La Caletilla — do not exceed one hundred meters in length, but they encapsulate all the charm of the eastern Málaga coast. They are a refuge for those seeking a peaceful swim without giving up being just steps from the centre.

La Caletilla: the smallest postcard of the Balcón de Europa

With just 50 meters of sand, La Caletilla is the tiniest of the three. Its size varies with the tide, but its location, right next to the Balcón de Europa, makes it one of the most photographed spots in the municipality. Surrounded by rocky cliffs, this cove combines the proximity of bars and services with a natural environment protected from the waves.

In summer, it tends to fill up quickly, but those who wake up early or arrive late enjoy a swim with views of the viewpoint. From above, tourists gaze down without knowing that down there, the most authentic Nerja is lived.

El Salón: maritime tradition in the shadow of the church

A few steps from the Balcón de Europa, to the west, lies El Salón beach. The first thing that catches the eye is the old fishermen's sheds, converted into summer cabins, that dot the shore and remind visitors of the village's maritime past. Access is via an alley next to the Church of El Salvador; you have to go down a slope, but it’s worth it.

The sand is medium-grained and the water is calm. The rocky formations surrounding it soften the waves and create a sheltered atmosphere that locals consider their best-kept secret. There are no beach bars or sunbed rentals: just sea, rocks, and the murmur of quiet conversations.

El Chorrillo: three coves for leisurely diving

El Chorrillo is not a beach, but three small consecutive coves that total about 90 meters in length. They are nestled between low cliffs and accessed via stairs from the promenade. It’s the ideal spot for those who enjoy snorkelling: the rocky seabed and clear water allow you to see schools of fish and sea urchins just a few meters from the shore.

Being slightly further away from the hustle and bustle of the centre, El Chorrillo is often the choice for those seeking tranquility even in August. However, be prepared: no giant umbrellas or wheeled coolers; here the space is limited and the footing is casual.

Overall, these three coves represent the other side of Nerja, the one that doesn’t appear in brochures but that locals proudly defend. They are small sandy spots that show that sometimes, the best things are found in the smallest details.
