The Nerja Town Council has commemorated the International LGTBIQ+ Pride Day with an institutional event where the II 'Pride of Nerja' Recognition was awarded to Jéssica López and Pedro Carlos González.

The reading of the institutional manifesto, based on that of the Spanish Federation of Municipalities and Provinces (FEMP), was carried out by Benita Duarte and Liz Mariela Escobar, a couple rooted in Nerja, who conveyed a message of defence of human rights, equal opportunities, and the fight against any form of discrimination based on sexual orientation, identity, or gender expression.

The most emotional moment of the day was the presentation of the II 'Pride of Nerja' Recognition to Jéssica López and Pedro Carlos González, two individuals particularly connected to the LGTBIQ+ community. Both received institutional gratitude for their trajectories, commitment, and contribution to the visibility and defence of diversity in the municipality. López and González have become references for inclusion and respect in the locality.

The mayor of Nerja, José Alberto Armijo, congratulated the honourees and highlighted that "we continue to work so that all people can live in freedom, with equal rights and without any form of discrimination." He also valued the collaboration with the Axarquía Diversa association in promoting awareness and support initiatives for the community. "With this event, Nerja reaffirms its firm commitment to defending the rights of LGTBIQ+ people, promoting policies and actions that contribute to building a fairer, more diverse, and inclusive society," concluded the mayor.

The event, held on the morning of June 28, was attended by municipal councillors and representatives of social groups. During the ceremony, the rainbow flag was displayed on the facade of the Town Hall, a symbolic gesture that is repeated every year. Nerja thus celebrates its second official recognition of individuals from the community, after the first posthumous award was given to a local activist in 2025.

The event is part of a broader programme organised by the Town Council in collaboration with Axarquía Diversa, which includes educational workshops in schools and an awareness campaign against LGTBIfobia. The mayor announced that next year they plan to expand the activities, intending for "Nerja to be a reference in the region for equality and diversity."

The LGTBIQ+ Pride event in Nerja is solidifying as a key date on the local calendar, with increasing citizen participation. The Town Council encourages the population to join the upcoming initiatives, which will be announced through official channels.
