Plaza de los Cangrejos in Nerja will host the pastoral gathering 'Zambombas al Fresquito' on August 1, celebrated for the first time outside Mijas.
The Friends of Zambombeo Association has chosen Nerja as the first municipality outside Mijas to hold its traditional summer pastoral gathering, named Zambombas al Fresquito. The event will take place on August 1 in the Plaza de los Cangrejos, with a programme starting at 20:00 with a parade from the passage of Calle Carmen, next to the Town Hall.
Five Pastoral Groups at the Event
The event will begin at 21:30 and will feature five groups: Pastoral de Iznate, Raíces de Colmenarejo (Málaga), Los Pastores del Puerto (Alhaurín), Las Lagunas de Mijas, and the host Pastoral de las Protegidas de Nerja. Each group will present a repertoire of Christmas carols and popular songs from Málaga, in an outdoor setting aimed at combating the summer heat with festive music.
“It’s a unique opportunity for locals and visitors to enjoy a tradition that is part of our cultural identity,” said José Miguel Ortuño, president of the Neighbours Association of Las Protegidas and director of its pastoral.
Nerja, a Pioneer Outside Mijas
The Councillor for Tourism, Ana María Muñoz, highlighted during the presentation that Nerja becomes the first municipality to host this initiative outside Mijas, which is a recognition of its commitment to traditional culture. “Pastorals are a musical heritage that we must preserve and promote, and this event is an important step for its dissemination,” she stated.
The initiative, organised by the Friends of Zambombeo Association, aims to travel to different locations in the province to bring the pastorals to new audiences. Nerja will be the first stop on this journey, which seeks to revalue a cultural expression with over a century of history in the province of Málaga.
A Different Plan for Summer
The event, which is free to enter, invites locals and tourists to enjoy a different evening in the heart of August, combining the coolness of the Nerja night with traditional sounds. The organisers recommend arriving early to enjoy the parade and find a good spot in the square. Undoubtedly, it’s an original way to get a head start on Christmas without having to wait until December, and with the added bonus of doing it outdoors in somewhat milder temperatures.
