The Málaga City Council has closed the park at Alfonso XII square as a precaution after a large tree collapsed on Friday without causing any injuries. Technical services will inspect the area on Monday.
The park at Alfonso XII square, in the Centro district of Málaga, has been closed since Friday afternoon after a large tree fell without causing personal damage. The alert was registered at 19:25 hours via 112, according to information from the Málaga City Council on its social media.
The caller informed the Andalusia Emergency Agency (EMA) that a whole tree had fallen, not just a simple branch. Firefighters and Local Police were dispatched to the scene in the Cristo de la Epidemia neighbourhood, very close to the Santuario de la Victoria, and decided to close the area as a precaution.
The Parks and Gardens service plans to inspect the area next Monday to assess the condition of the trees and determine when the park can be reopened. In the meantime, the council asks residents to respect the cordoned-off perimeter.
This incident adds to a dozen large branch falls recorded in Málaga over the past year. The most serious occurred on August 22, when a eucalyptus branch fell in a square in Miraflores de los Ángeles, injuring two young women aged 21 and 23 who were sitting on a bench. One of them had to be hospitalised in serious condition.
Two days after that incident, another large branch broke on Encarnación Fontiveros street, in the northern area of Carlos Haya, and fell onto a vehicle. There were no injuries, but the fall alarmed residents and required the intervention of the Local Police and Firefighters.
The City Council has not yet specified when Alfonso XII park will reopen, pending technical reports. Residents in the area should avoid the site until further notice.
