The XVIII Francisco Hernández Open Air Painting Competition will take place on July 25 in Torre del Mar, with over €3,000 in prizes and a free theme.

On July 25, the streets of Torre del Mar will once again transform into an improvised art workshop with the celebration of the XVIII Francisco Hernández Open Air Painting Competition. This year, the event coincides with the Feria de Santiago and Santa Ana, distributing over €3,000 in prizes among the participating artists.

Awards and competition rules

The competition, organised by the Vélez-Málaga City Council, will feature three awards: a first prize of €1,700, a second prize of €800, and a third prize of €500. The works must be presented in a format of 81 x 100 centimetres and the theme is free, although the jury will particularly value those inspired by Torre del Mar and its surroundings.

Participants can register from 9:00 AM at the Nuestra Señora del Carmen building, the former Sugar Factory of Torre del Mar, where the works will also be collected until 2:00 PM. The awarded pieces will become part of the municipal heritage.

A tribute to painter Francisco Hernández

The competition pays tribute to the painter Francisco Hernández, whose figure was remembered during the event's presentation. The event was attended by the first deputy mayor of Vélez-Málaga and deputy mayor of Torre del Mar, Jesús Pérez Atencia; the councillor for Culture, Alicia Pérez; and the artist's daughters, Carmen and María Jesús Hernández.

During the day, locals and visitors will be able to stroll through the streets to witness the creative process of the participants live. This initiative, now in its eighteenth edition, has established itself as one of the most significant cultural events in the Axarquía.

More information and next steps

Those interested can consult the complete rules and the cultural programme of the municipality on the Vélez-Málaga City Council website. The event promises a day of art, colour, and tradition in the heart of the Eastern Costa del Sol.

“It is a pride that this competition continues to grow and that the streets of Torre del Mar are filled with art once again,” highlighted Jesús Pérez Atencia during the presentation.

For artists wishing to participate, it is advisable to arrive early to formalise registration and choose the best spot to paint. However, those who do not rise early risk missing out on a place under the awnings of the main square, where the sun can be intense in July.
