The municipality of Nerja invests €131,000 in drones, surveillance towers, and a team of 50 personnel for the summer season, consolidating its leadership on the Costa del Sol with four Blue Flags and three Q for Tourist Quality.

Nerja has gone all out for this summer season. With an investment of €131,000, the Town Hall has deployed a security and quality device that includes 50 lifeguards, two state-of-the-art drones, and new surveillance towers. All of this is to maintain the four Blue Flags that fly on its beaches: Maro, Torrecilla, Playazo-Chucho, and Burriana, in addition to the three Q for Tourist Quality that endorse its services.

The mayor, José Alberto Armijo, and the councillor for Beaches, María del Carmen López, raised the Blue Flag at Burriana in an event that served to present the operation. "These measures are essential to maintain Nerja's competitiveness," Armijo pointed out. The investment, co-financed by NextGenerationUE European funds under the Sustainable Tourism Plan in Destinations, aims not only to raise safety standards but also to ensure a positive impact on the local economy during the peak months.

Drones and technology to monitor the coastline

The two drones acquired will allow for real-time aerial surveillance, detecting risks and coordinating rescues more quickly. The system is complemented by new surveillance towers and a renewed telecommunications and public address system, which will improve communication with bathers. "It's a qualitative leap in the safety of our beaches," explained the head of the Local Police, Francisco Iranzo, who supervised the deployment of the device alongside the councillor for Tourism, Ana María Muñoz.

The municipality of Nerja, already a benchmark on the Costa del Sol, thus reinforces its commitment to quality and safety. It's no small matter: tourism is the engine of the local economy, and these recognitions are a magnet for visitors. "We want everyone who comes to Nerja to feel safe and enjoy excellent beaches," López added. With this deployment, the council positions itself at the forefront of beach management in Andalusia.

Recognitions that attract tourism

The Blue Flags are not a whim. They are an international seal that certifies water quality, safety, and services. Nerja has managed to maintain them year after year, something not everyone can achieve. The Q for Tourist Quality, on the other hand, guarantees that the beach services meet the highest standards. "These recognitions differentiate us and make us more attractive," Armijo highlighted.

For the residents of Nerja, this deployment brings peace of mind. Knowing that there are 50 lifeguards on watch and that technology is on their side allows them to enjoy the summer with fewer worries. Moreover, the investment has been made with European funds, meaning it has not posed an extra burden on municipal finances. However, the Town Hall will need to maintain the level so that the flags continue to fly next year. Because, as the saying goes, it's not just about arriving, but staying.

With this device, Nerja is preparing for a season that promises to be a record for visitors. The drones, towers, and lifeguards will be operational from June to September, covering the eight kilometres of coastline of the municipality. So, if you plan to go to the beach this summer, you know: in Nerja, they take care of you.
