The San Isidro Irrigation Community in Nerja has launched the second phase of its digitisation project, with a grant of 88,435.83 euros from the Digital Water Cycle PERTE, funded by the European Union.

The San Isidro Irrigation Community in Nerja has begun the implementation of the second phase of its strategic investment plan for digitisation, a project that will transform irrigation management in the area. The initiative, funded with 88,435.83 euros through the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan (Digital Water Cycle PERTE), is managed by the Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge.

This grant, awarded in the second call of 2024 under a competitive bidding process, allows the irrigation community to modernise its infrastructure and move towards a more efficient and sustainable management model. Among the planned actions is the establishment of a corporate website with an electronic processing portal, a complaints channel, and digital communication tools, as well as informational panels on water usage.

In the field of cartography, the irrigation perimeter, the census of irrigators and tenants will be updated, and an inventory of the irrigation infrastructure will be carried out using GPS, complemented by a GIS map viewer. These improvements will enable precise knowledge of the irrigable area and facilitate decision-making.

One of the most significant advancements is the remote reading of the Pozo Bolichero intake, which will allow for the remote consultation of flow rates and volumes, reducing travel and improving data reliability. Additionally, 88 obsolete hydrant meters will be replaced, which did not allow for modern consumption control.

Soil moisture content detection equipment will also be installed, optimising water use. In terms of information systems, a remote reading system for the new meters will be implemented, along with a mobile application for Android and iOS that will allow members to access their consumption data, a weather viewer with precipitation and temperature maps, and a module for weekly irrigation recommendations based on agro-climatic data from the SIAR network.

The project, funded by the European Union through the NextGenerationEU funds, represents an important step in the modernisation of irrigation in Nerja. Digitisation will reduce reliance on manual procedures, improve water traceability, and consolidate a more responsible and effective management model. Members will benefit from simplified electronic management and more detailed information about their operations.

In a context of drought and water scarcity, initiatives like this are essential to ensure efficient resource use. The San Isidro Irrigation Community in Nerja, which groups dozens of farmers in the area, expects the new tools to be operational in the coming months.
