The Marbella City Council is finalising the sustainable renovation of the Adolfo Suárez Fair and Congress Palace, which will be completed in approximately two weeks. The works, funded by European funds, are already 95% complete.
The Adolfo Suárez Fair and Congress Palace in Marbella is nearing the final stages of its sustainable renovation. The City Council has reported that the work, which began ten months ago, is 95% complete and will be finished in approximately two weeks. This intervention is part of the Tourism Sustainability Plan and is financed by the European Union through the NextGenerationEU funds, under the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan.
One of the most notable milestones of this final phase is the installation of more than 500 photovoltaic solar panels on the building's roof. These panels will generate clean energy to supply not only the congress palace itself but also part of its surroundings, which will result in a significant reduction in energy consumption for municipal facilities in the area.
The councillor responsible for the area, Diego López, has emphasised the complexity of an intervention that has completely transformed the building without ever halting its activities. “During this period of work, we have managed to reconcile the execution of the works with the holding of congresses, events and scheduled activities, so the venue has remained open and fully operational,” he stated.
In addition to the solar panels, the renovation has included a complete overhaul of the heating and lighting systems, improvements to the insulation and enclosure of the building, waterproofing of the roof, and the incorporation of intelligent energy management systems. All of this makes the Adolfo Suárez Palace a much more efficient and sustainable building, according to municipal sources.
One of the most innovative aspects of the project is the implementation of a rainwater harvesting system. All the water collected on the building's roof is channelled to tanks installed around the palace, where it is stored for later use in irrigating green areas. This measure is particularly relevant during periods of water scarcity, such as those experienced on the Costa del Sol in recent years.
The councillor highlighted that “this action not only improves the energy performance of the building but also incorporates sustainable solutions to optimise the use of valuable resources such as water.” He added that “it is an investment designed to make the Palace a more efficient, resilient infrastructure prepared for the future.”
The project, which has involved a multi-million euro investment funded by European funds, is part of the Marbella City Council's strategy to modernise its tourist and congress infrastructures, a key sector for the local economy. The completion of the works will coincide with the start of the peak season for congresses and events, allowing the venue to offer renewed and more sustainable facilities.
With this renovation, the Adolfo Suárez Fair and Congress Palace positions itself as a benchmark in energy efficiency and sustainability in the province of Málaga. Residents and visitors to Marbella will be able to enjoy a more modern and environmentally friendly space, which will also help reduce the municipality's carbon footprint.
