The Nájera Jazz festival returns to the Museum of the City of Antequera with three days of free concerts. The performances, starting on July 9, revive the format of three nights after two editions with only two. Invitations can be collected from this Monday.
The courtyard of the Museum of the City of Antequera (MVCA) will once again be the stage for the Nájera Jazz festival from July 9 to 11. This event, which is part of the Luz de Luna programming, brings back the three nights of concerts this year after the last editions only featured two. The performances will start each day at 21:30 and will be free, although prior invitation is required due to limited capacity.
A lineup with three distinct proposals
The Councillor for Tourism, Ana Cebrián, presented a programme that she described as one of the consolidated cultural offerings of the Antequera summer. The festival will kick off on Thursday, July 9, with Valdés Brothers & Francis Posé. Jessie and Leyanis Valdés, from one of the most recognised families in Cuban jazz, will join Málaga bassist Francis Posé to offer a mix of jazz with Cuban rhythms.
On Friday, July 10, Jitterburg Jazz Group, a Málaga trio with Antequera musicians, will take the stage. Their repertoire will cover everything from blues and ballads to bossa nova, Latin jazz, boleros, and soundtracks. The proposal is designed to bring the genre closer to all audiences.
The festival will close on Saturday, July 11, with Bernáldez Latin Jazz Orchestra and the show 'A Night in Havana'. The ensemble, featuring around ten musicians, will take the audience through Latin and Cuban sounds inspired by the Cuban capital of the mid-20th century.
Free invitations with limited capacity
The concerts are free, but it is necessary to collect an invitation due to the limited capacity of the MVCA courtyard. Tickets can be collected from this Monday, July 6, at the museum itself, with a maximum of two invitations per person and concert. The councillor encouraged locals and visitors to enjoy a programme in a "central, accessible, and particularly pleasant" space.
For Antequerans and tourists looking to plan their summer, Nájera Jazz is solidifying itself as an unmissable event. The MVCA courtyard, with its intimate atmosphere, allows for enjoying music in a historic setting. The three nights offer varied styles, from the most danceable Cuban jazz to the most orchestral Latin jazz, along with an eclectic repertoire designed for those who are not experts in the genre.
The revival of the three days provides an extra incentive for live music lovers. In previous editions, the two-night format left some attendees wanting more. This year, the organisation has aimed to take a step forward and offer a more complete experience, with a lineup that combines local and international artists.
For those who cannot attend every day, each concert is independent and offers a unique experience. Thursday promises to be a night of Cuban rhythms with the Valdés Brothers, Friday a journey through different styles with Jitterburg Jazz Group, and Saturday a tribute to Havana with the Bernáldez Latin Jazz Orchestra. Diversity is the key to this edition.
Invitations can be collected at the MVCA during museum opening hours. It is recommended to arrive early, as capacity is limited and tickets tend to sell out. The concerts will start promptly at 21:30, so arriving a few minutes early is a good idea to find a good spot in the courtyard.
The Nájera Jazz is undoubtedly one of the most anticipated cultural events of the summer in Antequera. With the return to three nights, the festival demonstrates that jazz has a loyal audience in the city. And, as the councillor says, the MVCA courtyard is the perfect place to enjoy it: central, accessible, and with a special charm that only a summer night can provide.
