The Mijas Town Council will allocate 885,603.44 euros from the Joint Investment Plan to renovate the roof of the La Cala sports centre, improving waterproofing and energy efficiency with photovoltaic panels.

The La Cala sports centre in Mijas will have its roof renewed thanks to the 885,603.44 euros that the Mijas Town Council will receive from the Joint Investment Plan (PIM) of the Consortium of Municipalities of the Western Costa del Sol. The action aims to solve leakage problems and, in turn, reduce the building's energy consumption.

The Councillor for Sports, Mari Francis Alarcón, has been responsible for announcing the project, which has already been drafted by the Mijas Council. It will be the Consortium that tenders and executes the works, once the plan was approved in an extraordinary session of its assembly.

The works will not be uniform throughout the facility. In the roof of the pavilion, waterproofing and rainwater drainage will be improved, with a new roof that will increase the slope by 2% and the installation of new carpentry. Downpipes will also be uncovered and drainage holes will be increased.

In the corridor, similar actions will be taken, with a slope increase of 1.5% and reinforcement of waterproofing at the weakest points. For the service areas and gym, the slope will rise between 2% and 2.5%, and photovoltaic panels will be installed to meet the energy demand of the facility.

The PIM 2026 includes a total investment of 7,046,659.83 euros for the eleven municipalities that make up the Consortium. Mijas is the second municipality with the highest allocation, just behind Marbella and ahead of Fuengirola, Benalmádena, and Torremolinos.

The distribution of funds combines a fixed part per municipality and a variable part according to the participation coefficient in the entity, so that smaller towns are not disadvantaged. Each locality has had to present up to two investment proposals, with a detailed budget and timeline.

The plan aims to finance projects in areas such as the integral water cycle, waste management, beaches, urban environment, tourism, and the acquisition of efficient vehicles or machinery. In the case of Mijas, the priority has been a sports infrastructure heavily used by the residents of La Cala, who will see improvements in a facility suffering from humidity issues.

The works will be tendered soon by the Consortium, although a specific date for the start of the works has not yet been set. Meanwhile, the Mijas Town Council hopes that the roof renovation will definitively resolve the leaks and reduce the energy bill of the sports centre.
