The Mijas Town Hall has sprayed the Andalucía, El Abuelo, and 3 de Abril parks in Las Lagunas this Wednesday, following the detection of mosquitoes carrying the West Nile virus in nearby traps. The facilities will remain closed until tomorrow.
The Andalucía, El Abuelo, and 3 de Abril parks, located in the Las Lagunas area, were sprayed this morning by the Mijas Town Hall as part of the prevention plan for the West Nile virus. The action, carried out by the municipal health department, responds to the detection of vector mosquitoes in traps in the Miramar area, according to the latest control by the Junta de Andalucía.
The councillor responsible for the area, Marco Cortés, has confirmed that the three spaces will remain closed to the public throughout today and will reopen tomorrow Thursday at their usual hours. The spraying is part of the reinforcement of the surveillance plan that the Town Hall initiated last Saturday, July 24, when intensive spraying was carried out over the weekend in wet areas and drains of the municipality.
Since then, the Health department has increased the frequency of spraying in the affected area, changing from biweekly to weekly within a radius of up to 1.5 kilometres around the detection point. These measures will remain in place at least until August 21, the date when the alert declared by the Junta de Andalucía ends.
It is worth noting that on July 14, the regional administration conducted an inspection in Mijas and found no presence of the virus. However, the subsequent detection of mosquitoes in traps has led to intensified preventive efforts. The Town Hall emphasizes the importance of residents adopting basic measures such as using repellents and mosquito nets, as well as avoiding the accumulation of stagnant water in buckets, tubs, or ponds on private properties.
Today's spraying adds to the ongoing work that the Town Hall has been carrying out since the weekend, aiming to minimize the risk of transmission of the West Nile virus. Citizen collaboration is key to preventing the proliferation of mosquitoes in the domestic environment.
The affected parks are very popular spaces in Las Lagunas, especially among families and elderly people who use them daily. The temporary closure aims to ensure the safety of users while the applied products take effect.
