The Junta de Andalucía has included Alhaurín de la Torre in the alert area for the circulation of the West Nile virus after detecting carrier mosquitoes less than 1.5 kilometres from the urban centre. The Town Hall insists that there is no transmission to humans and is reinforcing prevention.

The Town Hall of Alhaurín de la Torre has conveyed a message of reassurance to residents after the Junta de Andalucía included the municipality in the alert system for the circulation of the West Nile virus.

The declaration responds to the fact that regional surveillance has detected carrier mosquitoes in traps located less than 1.5 kilometres from the population centre, which according to the regional protocol determines the entry into this alert level. The Town Hall emphasizes that no transmission of the virus to humans has been recorded in the locality.

The Town Hall has been continuously working against mosquitoes for three years as part of its Municipal Vector Surveillance and Control Plan. This summer, fumigation in higher-risk areas has been intensified, and now, with the alert activated, control of potential larval breeding sites and mosquito shelters will be reinforced both in the urban area and its surroundings.

The Town Hall requests citizen cooperation to avoid water accumulation in patios, terraces, gardens, or plots, as buckets, pots, birdbaths, or small containers can become breeding sites. It also recommends using mosquito nets, clothing that covers arms and legs during peak insect activity hours, applying approved repellents, and keeping swimming pools and water containers properly treated.

The Town Hall will keep the population informed of any updates in coordination with the Junta de Andalucía and technical and health services.
