The information study for expanding the Málaga metro is entering its final phase and will have a verdict in the first half of 2027, according to the Minister of Development. There are 12 possible routes towards Ciudad Jardín, the PTA or the Eastern area.
The Minister of Development of the Junta de Andalucía, Mario Muñoz-Atanet, confirmed this Monday in Málaga that the study to decide the next expansion of the metro will be ready in the first half of 2027. He stated this after meeting with the mayor, Francisco de la Torre, in a meeting that served to coordinate the next steps for the subway and other city infrastructures.
The study, drafted by the consortium formed by the Málaga company ARCS and Typsa, has a budget of nearly 584,000 euros and an initial timeframe of 17 months. The work began on August 20, 2025, and has already narrowed down 12 possible routes: three towards Ciudad Jardín, three towards the Technological Park and Campanillas, and six towards the Eastern area and Rincón de la Victoria, according to Diario Sur.
In the current phase, the best technical solution for each corridor will be determined. The institutional commitment is to choose a winning proposal, which will be considered the most urgent and priority, and submit it for public information throughout the first half of 2027. Once agreed upon, it will be the first for which the construction project can be commissioned.
Regarding the works to complete the current network, the minister detailed that section 1 (the Hilera section) is 75% complete, slowed down by the archaeological excavation of a previously unknown Roman necropolis. Section 2, under the axis of Eugenio Gross, is progressing at 35%, and section 3, between Eugenio Gross and Blas de Lezo, began last August. The total investment exceeds 150 million euros.
“As was committed, all sections of the extension are being executed simultaneously,” Muñoz-Atanet recalled.
In the same meeting, it was agreed to create a transport and mobility infrastructure commission between the Junta and the City Council, with a quarterly basis and specific working groups. Among the projects it will address are the distributor road and the extension of Joaquín Vargas Avenue, as well as road connections in the northwest area of Málaga.
