The Mijas Town Hall has completed the construction of the Los Santos car park in Las Lagunas, following an investment of 15.7 million euros. The facility, which will offer 272 spaces, is set to open next September.

The Mijas Town Hall has announced the completion of the Los Santos car park, located in Las Lagunas, an infrastructure that promises to alleviate the long-standing parking issues in the area. The mayor, Ana Mata, visited the facilities this Thursday and confirmed that the opening is scheduled for September, after passing the final technical tests.

The car park, which has involved an investment of 15.7 million euros, ultimately features 272 spaces, 38 more than initially planned in the project. As the mayor explained, the reorganisation of the spaces allowed for these additional spots without reducing the dimensions of those already designed.

Subscription and rotation spaces

Of the 272 spaces, 200 are available for subscription for local residents at a price of 50 euros per month. Last March, a draw was held among the registered applicants at the Employment Promotion building in Las Lagunas, and the spaces have already been allocated. The remaining 72 will operate on a rotation basis, meaning any driver can use them by paying the corresponding ticket.

The mayor emphasised that this infrastructure will improve mobility in a well-established urban area that has traditionally suffered from parking shortages. “It is a long-awaited response to a community demand,” Mata stated during the visit, accompanied by the Infrastructure councillor, Juan José Torres.

Final details and technical tests

Currently, workers are finalising the last details before the official handover to the Town Hall. Throughout the remainder of July and August, tests of ventilation, air conditioning, barriers, elevators, and fire prevention systems will be conducted. The next step is the electrical connection, for which the Town Hall is finalising the contract with the supplier.

The Los Santos car park occupies almost the entire underground area of the La Cala, Mijas, and Los Olivos squares, connected by San Matías street. The infrastructure consists of four levels and two pedestrian access points from the outside, equipped with stairs and elevators, complying with regulations for the elimination of architectural barriers.

Access roads now operational

Since last March, the roads surrounding the car park have been open to traffic. The entrance ramp is located on San Jorge street, next to the connection with La Cala square, while the exit ramp is in Mijas square. Both ramps are situated in the central island, facilitating circulation.

For the residents of Las Lagunas, the opening of this car park represents a relief in their daily lives. Until now, finding parking in the area has been an odyssey, especially during peak hours. With the 272 spaces, it is expected to reduce pressure on the surrounding streets and improve vehicle turnover.

The Mijas Town Hall has reminded that the subscription spaces have already been allocated, but those who were not lucky in the draw can opt for the rotation spaces. The ticket price has not yet been made public, but it is expected to be competitive with other car parks in the area.
