The PSOE of Marbella has warned that the mayor, Ángeles Muñoz, will privatize the Trapiche del Prado senior residence after the 2027 elections. The party demands that it be public and for the residents of the municipality.

The general secretary of PSOE of Marbella and councillor, José Bernal, denounced this Friday that the Trapiche del Prado senior residence, whose construction has taken two decades, will end up being private. In a press conference, Bernal stated that the mayor, Ángeles Muñoz, from the PP, has planned for the centre to manage places for people from outside the municipality, once the municipal elections in May 2027 are over.

Bernal recalled that the work has been made possible thanks to a contribution of almost three million euros from the Government of Spain. "If it weren't for that investment, the building wouldn't be finished," he emphasized. The councillor criticized that the PP "intends for the elections to pass without us seeing the reality, which will be private and for people from outside."

A broken promise for 20 years

The Trapiche del Prado residence has been in limbo for 20 years. The PSOE recalls that the mayor promised repeatedly a public residence for the elderly of Marbella, but it has never materialized until now. "This is the great betrayal of Ángeles Muñoz to our elderly," Bernal exclaimed, warning that the PSOE will fight to ensure that the centre "is public and for our elderly."

The councillor pointed out that there is no agreement with the Junta de Andalucía to arrange places, which, in his opinion, confirms the intention to privatize management. "We are not aware of any agreement with the Junta," he insisted. The PSOE demands that the residence be integrated into the Andalusian public network for elderly care.

Historic investment in dependency for Málaga

In the same appearance, the national deputy and socialist spokesperson in Marbella, Isabel Pérez, highlighted that the Government of Spain has approved the largest investment in dependency in history. The Royal Decree-Law of extraordinary measures for the System of Autonomy and Care for Dependency will entail 6.2 billion euros additional in 2026 and 2027.

Of that amount, Andalucía will receive 954 million euros extra, of which 145 million correspond to the province of Málaga. "It is the largest public investment ever made to strengthen the dependency system," Pérez stated. The deputy emphasized that the goal is for the State to assume 50% of the system's cost by 2027.

Pérez called on the Junta de Andalucía to use these resources to reduce waiting lists and create more residential places in Marbella and San Pedro Alcántara. "Marbella needs more places, more day centres, more home help, and more agile care," she pointed out. "The Government provides the resources; now the Junta must invest them," she concluded.

The PSOE has announced that it will present initiatives in the Marbella City Council to ensure that the Trapiche residence is public and for the residents, and has urged the mayor to clarify her plans before the elections.
