The Marbella City Council has named a roundabout after lawyer Nielson Sánchez-Stewart, in recognition of his more than 50 years of professional career and his connection to the city. The mayor, Ángeles Muñoz, presided over the inauguration ceremony this Monday.
The City Council of Marbella has dedicated a roundabout to lawyer Nielson Sánchez-Stewart as recognition of his professional career and his close ties to the city for over five decades. The new space, located at the junction of Nuestra Señora de Gracia and Alonso de Bazán streets, is also near the place where the honoree opened his office in 1977.
During the inauguration ceremony, the mayor, Ángeles Muñoz, highlighted that the incorporation of his name into the municipal street map is “a show of affection towards a person who has been deeply connected to our municipality” and who has been part of the city's transformation over the last 50 years. In this regard, she noted that the tribute recognises “both his professional career and the decision to choose this locality to develop his personal and professional life.”
Muñoz emphasised that Sánchez-Stewart arrived in Marbella in 1973, where he established his home, opened his office, and developed much of his activity. The mayor considered that this connection makes the lawyer “a magnificent ambassador for our city” and a figure “deeply rooted in the recent history of the municipality.” During the event, the mayor reviewed some of the main milestones of his career, including his work at the Malaga Bar Association, of which he was dean, as well as his involvement in areas related to professional ethics and legal aid. She also highlighted his role as a Doctor of Law, academic, professor, author, and speaker, as well as the various distinctions he has received throughout his career.
Alongside these merits, Muñoz particularly emphasised his contribution to the development of the legal profession in Marbella. Among his initiatives is the push for a dedicated headquarters for the Malaga Bar Association, the promotion of its library, and the establishment of the School of Legal Practice classroom, which has seen hundreds of professionals pass through. The mayor stressed that the tribute transcends the figure of the lawyer and extends to all those who work daily to defend the rights of citizens. “With your name, we also want to recognise those who work every day to ensure coexistence and preserve something as essential for our society as the Rule of Law,” she stated.
The event brought together this Monday family members of the honoree, professional colleagues, friends, and institutional representatives, including the dean of the Malaga Bar Association, Flor Carrasco, and former leaders of the institution. The mayor especially thanked the presence of the family and all those who wanted to accompany the lawyer on a day she defined as “a big thank you” for his work, career, commitment, and example. For his part, Sánchez-Stewart expressed his deep gratitude to Marbella for a distinction that, as he stated, holds special meaning for him. The lawyer assured that the city has given him “much more” than he could have contributed during the more than 50 years he has been linked to it, allowing him to “build a home, open an office, educate my children, and, in two words, be happy.”
He also thanked the City Council and the mayor for the reception of the initiative and the unanimity reached to carry it out. In this regard, he considered that the municipal agreement constitutes “an act of generosity” and recalled that tributes and distinctions, in his opinion, “are neither requested nor rejected, they are simply appreciated.” The honoree also had words of recognition for the Malaga Bar Association, his colleagues in Marbella, the professionals who have worked alongside him for years, and, in particular, his family, to whom he attributed an essential part of his career. Likewise, he thanked those who promoted the initiative and the many people who sent him their support and congratulations.
