The Town Hall of Marbella and the Spanish Triathlon Federation have signed an agreement to promote the city's candidacy as the host of the Triathlon World Tour between 2027 and 2029.

The Town Hall of Marbella has taken a firm step towards becoming one of the venues for the new Triathlon World Tour, the global circuit promoted by World Triathlon and the PTO starting in 2027. The mayor, Ángeles Muñoz, and the president of the Spanish Triathlon Federation (FETRI), José Hidalgo, signed a collaboration agreement in Madrid on Wednesday that strengthens the city's candidacy for the 2027, 2028, and 2029 seasons.

A new circuit for professional triathlon

The Triathlon World Tour is born with the aim of unifying and organising the international calendar of professional triathlon. According to sources from World Triathlon, the circuit will include medium-distance events in T100 format and will become the main showcase for the sport. Marbella, which has already hosted the IRONMAN 70.3 and the IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship for six years, aims to maintain its position as a reference on the global map.

For the residents and fans of the Costa del Sol, the arrival of the Triathlon World Tour would mean the return of a major international sporting event after the city lost the IRONMAN event. The agreement signed today is the first administrative step for Marbella to be back in the spotlight of the triathlon world.

Organisational experience and institutional support

Marbella's candidacy is supported by its track record. The city has demonstrated its organisational capacity with events such as the IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship, which attracted thousands of participants and tourists. Ángeles Muñoz highlighted that the agreement "continues the strategy of positioning Marbella internationally as a destination for major sporting events."

Present at the signing were the president of World Triathlon, Antonio Fernández Arimany, and three-time world champion Mario Mola. Their support adds institutional weight to the proposal. José Hidalgo emphasised that "Marbella meets all the conditions to be an international reference for triathlon."

The competition is high: several European and Asian cities are also vying to enter the Triathlon World Tour calendar. However, Marbella's previous experience and the support from FETRI place it in a privileged position.

What it means for Spanish triathlon and for Marbella

If the candidacy is successful, Marbella would host an event of the new circuit for at least three years. This would imply a significant economic and tourist return for the city, as well as keeping Spain on the map of elite triathlon. For local athletes, it would provide the opportunity to compete at home against the best in the world.

The final calendar of the Triathlon World Tour will be known in the coming months. The final decision will depend on negotiations between World Triathlon and the candidate cities. In the meantime, Marbella has already taken the first step with this agreement, reinforcing its commitment to sport as a driver of development.

Triathlon fans in the province can expect news in the coming months. The Town Hall of Marbella has announced that it will continue working to ensure the city hosts the Triathlon World Tour starting in 2027. The next event will be the official presentation of the circuit, scheduled for the end of the year.
