The city will be the only stop in Spain for the T100 World Championship Tour 2027, which will take place on September 18 and 19. The mayor, Ángeles Muñoz, attended the presentation in London.
Marbella has become the only Spanish venue for the new Triathlon World Tour, the global platform that will unify the main professional triathlon competitions starting in 2027. The city will host the fifth event of the T100 World Championship Tour on September 18 and 19 of that year, as confirmed by the City Council following the official presentation held in London.
The mayor of Marbella, Ángeles Muñoz, and the councillor for Sports, Lisandro Vieytes, travelled to the British capital to attend the event where World Triathlon and the Professional Triathletes Organisation (PTO) unveiled the new competitive model. The project aims to end the historical fragmentation of the international calendar and provide a common structure that facilitates the following of the sport for fans, sponsors, and media.
The Triathlon World Tour will consist of two major circuits. On one hand, the T50 World Championship Tour, which is the successor to the current World Triathlon Series (WTCS). On the other, the T100 World Championship Tour, which is an evolution of the current T100 Triathlon World Tour. Both will culminate in world finals where the world champions of each distance will be crowned. Additionally, an intermediate category called Challenger will be created, which will serve as an official qualification route to the world circuits and will integrate the current World Triathlon Cups and Challenge Family circuit events.
The mayor of Marbella expressed her satisfaction with the inclusion of the city in the international calendar. “The arrival of the T100 will be a very important event for Marbella. We are extremely excited to host it and welcome some of the best triathletes in the world again. Marbella is a capital of sport,” Muñoz stated.
The president of the Spanish Triathlon Federation (FETRI), José Hidalgo, also positively assessed the news. “It is an honour to announce that the World Tour, this new concept of world triathlon, will include Marbella for the 2027 edition. And it is an honour that its mayor has accompanied us in this presentation made in London,” Hidalgo noted.
For his part, the president of World Triathlon, Antonio Arimany, highlighted that the creation of the Triathlon World Tour represents a necessary structural change to promote the growth of the sport at an international level. “Our sport was very fragmented from a competitive and commercial point of view, which limited its development. With the Triathlon World Tour, we are creating a unified structure and brand capable of bringing together as many events as possible and generating benefits for the entire triathlon ecosystem,” he explained.
The initial calendar of the T100 World Championship Tour 2027 includes eight venues: Gold Coast (Australia), Singapore, San Francisco (United States), Vancouver (Canada), Marbella (Spain), Saudi Arabia, the World Championship finals in Qatar, and the French Riviera, the date of which is yet to be confirmed. Marbella will be the only stop in Spain and the fifth on the calendar, on a weekend that promises to attract the world's best long-distance specialists to the Costa del Sol.
The organisation of the event will provide a significant boost to tourism and sports for the city, which has already successfully hosted other international events. The City Council is already working on the logistical planning to host the competition, which will include swimming, cycling, and running segments through iconic locations in the municipality.
The Marbella event will be ranked for the world ranking and will distribute a significant prize pool, although specific figures have not yet been disclosed. Participation is expected to include the top names in professional triathlon, both in the men's and women's categories.
With this addition, Marbella strengthens its position as a reference destination for elite sport, adding triathlon to its already extensive calendar of events. The event on September 18 and 19, 2027, is shaping up to be one of the major sporting events of the year in the province of Málaga.
