Marbella City Council has begun the preparation of the 8,100 m² site in San Pedro Alcántara for the future transport interchange, a joint project with the Junta de Andalucía that exceeds €1.5 million and is expected to be completed in 2027.

Marbella City Council has started the adaptation works on the land where the San Pedro Alcántara transport interchange will be built, a key infrastructure for mobility in the Costa del Sol. The project, driven alongside the Junta de Andalucía, has an investment of over €1.5 million and is expected to be completed in 2027.

The deputy mayor of San Pedro, Javier García, confirmed this Tuesday after the Local Government Board that the basic project has already been submitted by the drafting team, while the execution project will be ready in July. "These works represent a very important step towards making this infrastructure a reality," García stated.

The site, measuring over 8,100 square meters, is located at the former 'Cielo de San Pedro', next to the intersection of the A-7 motorway and the Ronda road (A-397). Current works include the demolition of pavements, removal of concrete slabs and asphalt, land cleaning, tree transplantation, and the elimination of obstacles for future construction. The execution period for this phase is two months.

These actions are part of the agreement signed between Marbella City Council and the Ministry of Development on February 17, 2025. According to the agreement, the City Council is responsible for preparing the land, while the Junta will handle the execution, management, and maintenance of the interchange. "We are fulfilling our commitments and taking all necessary steps to ensure that San Pedro Alcántara finally has a modern and functional interchange," the councillor highlighted.

The Junta de Andalucía already has the basic project, which will allow it to request the construction license from the City Council. The execution project must be completed in July and, after its supervision, the tender process will proceed. García assured that the Ministry has budget allocation for the years 2026 and 2027, so "the funding is guaranteed." The expectation is that the public tender will be called between late 2026 and early 2027, to start the works and complete them before the end of that same year.

The interchange will feature a passenger building of about 150 square meters, six bus bays with waiting areas, taxi spaces, pedestrian connections, and parking. Additionally, it will have over 4,000 square meters of green areas that will serve as a transition between the infrastructure and the main roads. The architectural design, according to García, "is abstractly inspired by a sardine skewer, with a modern and representative image of the Costa del Sol." The facility "will help improve mobility and promote urban growth in San Pedro Alcántara to the north, integrating with new developments along the Ronda road."

This project aims to address the transport needs of an expanding area, improving connections between the A-7 motorway and the Ronda road, and facilitating access to nearby urban centres. The initiative adds to other sustainable mobility projects in the Costa del Sol, such as the expansion of bike lanes and the improvement of metropolitan bus lines.
