Marbella Local Police has reported a new phone scam in which fraudsters impersonate agents to solicit money from businesses in exchange for advertising in a non-existent magazine. The institution has spread the alert on social media and urges citizens not to fall for it.
Marbella Local Police has alerted the public about the emergence of a new phone scam. The fraudsters pose as officers to offer advertising to businesses in a magazine that does not exist. The aim is to obtain money from the victims through deception.
The alert has been disseminated through the social media channels of the Local Police, where it is stated that the institution “does not have any magazine from the Corps” and that “will never request financial collaboration” for publications, events, or any other initiative. This was explained by an officer in an institutional video.
In the message, Marbella Local Police makes it clear that those who receive a call offering to advertise their business in a supposed police magazine or demanding a financial contribution in the name of the institution “may be victims of a scam”.
Recommendations to avoid falling for the scam
In response to these calls, the Corps recommends immediate distrust, not providing personal or banking information, and, above all, not making any payments. Additionally, it asks those who have received such communications or have been victims of the deception to report it as soon as possible so that investigators can take action.
“Prevention is key”, emphasizes Marbella Local Police, which reinforces the message: “In the face of scams, zero tolerance.”
A growing phenomenon in the province
This is not the first time such frauds have been detected in the province of Málaga. The Consumer Union of Málaga already issued a warning last June about the increase in fraudulent calls where the identities of companies were impersonated to carry out unauthorized changes of service provider.
In those calls, the fraudsters identified themselves as energy advisors or even as consumer services, pressuring victims with a supposed increase in supply costs to accept urgent changes. Now, the scam has become more sophisticated and uses the image of the Local Police to gain credibility.
For residents of Marbella and its surroundings, the recommendation is clear: if they receive a call from someone claiming to be from the Local Police asking for money, hang up immediately and contact the Corps to verify the information. One should not be swayed by urgency or the convincing tone of the fraudsters.
Marbella Local Police reminds that its officers never call to ask for money. In case of doubt, the best course of action is to go to the police station or call the official number of the institution. And, of course, do not share banking information or make transfers without confirming the authenticity of the request.
