The Plaza de los Naranjos hosted a minute of silence on Friday called on the spur of the moment for the eleven victims of the Los Gallardos fire. Members of the government team, opposition, and emergency services attended the event.
The Plaza de los Naranjos in Marbella, in front of the town hall building under renovation, became the scene of an emotional minute of silence on Friday morning. The act, called just fifteen minutes earlier, served to pay tribute to the eleven people who lost their lives in the fire that broke out in the Almerian town of Los Gallardos. The number of victims, which could still rise, has shocked the entire community.
About thirty people gathered in the central location, including three members of the municipal government team: the Councillor for Security, José Eduardo Díaz, and his colleagues Isabel Cintado and Alejandro González. Also present were PSOE councillors José Bernal and Sonia Pérez, as well as representatives from the National Police, Local Police, and Firefighters.
Solidarity with the victims and emergency teams
During the event, José Eduardo Díaz spoke to express the condolences of the City Council. “We want to express our solidarity with the victims, their families, and all the professionals who are facing a moment of enormous difficulty because their work and dedication are essential to protect the population in such complex circumstances,” the councillor stated.
The councillor wanted to highlight the involvement of Marbella’s emergency services who have participated from the very beginning in the operation deployed due to the forest fire declared this Thursday in Benahavís, a fire that is still active. “The coordination and effort of everyone have been exemplary,” he added.
Collaboration of firefighters and Civil Protection
Díaz recalled that Marbella's firefighters have maintained three units permanently on the ground, with more than a dozen personnel, various firefighting vehicles, and a command integrated into the emergency coordination centre. This has been complemented by the participation of around twenty local Civil Protection volunteers, who worked throughout the night in support and logistics tasks.
The councillor highlighted that the priority of the operation was the protection of the homes threatened by the flames, an intervention that helped prevent even greater damage and protect dozens of properties. “Thanks to the quick response, the impact on residential areas has been minimized,” he emphasized.
For the residents of Marbella, this double tragedy — the Almería fire and the active one in Benahavís — serves as a reminder of the vulnerability to forest fires, especially during hot periods. The solidarity shown in the Plaza de los Naranjos reflects the sentiment of a community that is closely following the developments of both incidents. More details about the causes of the fire in Los Gallardos and the final victim count are expected to be revealed in the coming days.
