The municipality will hold an open meeting on June 3 to present its energy community initiative, aiming to cut electricity costs and boost renewable production.

Alhaurín el Grande residents and business owners will have the opportunity to learn about a new collaborative energy model during a public meeting scheduled for June 3 at the local library. The event, organized by the town hall in partnership with engineering firm E3 Ingenia, will detail two schemes designed to increase solar energy generation while reducing household and corporate electricity bills.

Mayor Anthony Bermúdez and Environment and Energy Efficiency Councillor Teresa Sánchez will lead the session, which begins at 18:00 in the Salón de Actos of the Biblioteca Municipal. They have urged citizens, company representatives and owners of private spaces to attend and discover how they can participate in either an energy community or a solar community model.

“This is a project that the government team has been working on intensively in recent months and represents a great opportunity to move towards a more sustainable, efficient and beneficial energy model for our neighbours and businesses,” Bermúdez said.

The energy community model functions like a residents’ association: the town hall and private individuals can cede rooftops or land for solar panel installation, and participants pay a fee to benefit from the generated power. This arrangement is expected to lower electricity costs for members while strengthening local energy production.

In parallel, the solar community model involves private companies that install, maintain and operate the solar panels at no cost to the property owners. In exchange, the firms pay a fee for using those spaces. Both approaches aim to accelerate the transition to clean energy without requiring upfront investment from participants.

Councillor Sánchez emphasized that the initiative is part of a broader municipal strategy to promote renewable energy and citizen engagement. “We want to foster a more collaborative and sustainable energy model, and we need the involvement of residents, businesses and property owners to make it happen,” she said.

The town hall has already identified several municipal sites where photovoltaic panels could be installed, and expects that private properties will also be offered. The project is designed to support future urban and industrial developments by increasing the local electricity generation capacity.

Alhaurín el Grande, a municipality in the Valle del Guadalhorce region of Málaga, has seen growing interest in sustainability initiatives. The town hall previously implemented energy efficiency measures in public buildings and promoted recycling campaigns, but this is the first time it has embarked on a community-based renewable energy project.

Interested individuals can register for the meeting via a Google Forms link provided on the town hall’s website. The session will include a presentation of both models, a question-and-answer period, and details on how to join. Attendance is free and open to all, but prior registration is recommended to ensure seating.

“We are convinced that this participatory approach will generate environmental, social and economic benefits for all Alhaurinos,” Bermúdez added. The meeting comes at a time when energy prices remain volatile, making collective self-consumption an attractive option for many households and businesses.

The event is one of several actions planned by the municipality to align with Spain’s national energy transition goals, which aim for 74% renewable electricity by 2030. Local initiatives like this are seen as crucial to achieving those targets at the community level.

After the meeting, the town hall will open a period for expressions of interest, followed by technical assessments of the proposed sites. The first installations could begin within the year if sufficient participation is secured.
