The City Council of Fuengirola and the Málaga Press Association are organising a new edition of the 'Press Without Age' workshop from October 26 to 30, consisting of ten teaching hours, to teach seniors how to detect misinformation and hoaxes. Registrations are now open at Calle Blanca Paloma.
The City Council of Fuengirola and the Málaga Press Association have opened the registration period for the new edition of the media literacy workshop for seniors 'Press Without Age', which will take place from October 26 to 30, from 10:00 to 12:00, with a total of ten teaching hours. The activity is sponsored by the La Caixa Foundation and in collaboration with the Málaga Provincial Council.
The councillor for Families, Equality and Social Welfare, Cristina Bornao, presented the initiative on Tuesday. Registrations can be formalised at the Third Age Area offices, located at Calle Blanca Paloma, from 9:00 to 13:00. Places are limited and prior registration is required.
“The aim is to equip our seniors with tools and knowledge to correctly interpret the information they receive through the media and to face hoaxes and fake news,” Bornao explained.
The programme includes digital skills to reduce the digital divide and facilitate safe access to digital services and resources. Participants will also learn to use conversational artificial intelligence assistants as a complementary tool to verify information and images and obtain answers in a simple and understandable way.
The initiative also aims to reduce situations of isolation and promote the connection of seniors with their environment through new technologies. Each participant may be accompanied by a family member or caregiver.
Bornao thanked the collaboration of the Málaga Press Association, the Provincial Council, and the La Caixa Foundation, and encouraged seniors in Fuengirola to participate: “It’s about learning to use tools that can be very useful in daily life and that will help us combat hoaxes and misinformation.”
The workshop will be conducted in two-hour sessions over five consecutive days, until the planned ten hours are completed, in the municipal facilities designated for the activity.
