The Plenary of the Vélez-Málaga City Council, meeting this Tuesday in the ordinary September session, has approved the granting of the Gold Medal of the City to the Franciscan Order, an institution present in the municipality since the late 15th century and linked to education, culture, social assistance, and local traditions. This distinction continues the process initiated by the City Council to recognise its historical contribution.
The session also supported institutional statements on the World Mental Health Day and World Alzheimer’s Day, with the municipal commitment to maintain awareness, prevention, and support for affected individuals and their families.
In terms of health prevention, the Plenary has adopted measures for monitoring, control, and follow-up against the spread of the Asian hornet, in order to enhance the detection of this species and act against potential issues in the municipality.
The proposal to create new parking spaces did not pass due to a lack of support from the governing team, which defended its own mobility strategy. The City Council has reminded that it has enabled over 1,500 parking spaces through the adaptation of plots and spaces, and that it maintains the project for 64 new spaces in the Historic Centre, next to the Local Police Headquarters, with works announced in May.
Regarding the waste fee, the Plenary did not approve the general suspension of the notification and collection procedure. The municipal government has defended that the process continues within the established framework, while the Collection Board addresses possible incidents individually, such as duplications or discrepancies in the measurements of certain premises. The PSOE's proposal to modify the tax ordinance of the IBI in the bonus for urbanisation, construction, and real estate promotion companies also did not prosper.
The City Council has focused on the lack of capacity of the electrical network, which has blocked developments for more than 4,000 homes in the municipality. The municipal government will continue to demand the necessary actions from the competent administrations to unblock these projects.
