The Fuengirola City Council has launched a video surveillance circuit at urban bus stops that alerts the Local Police in real time of any improperly parked vehicles. The aim is to protect users with reduced mobility and prevent traffic congestion.
The Fuengirola City Council has begun installing a video surveillance system at urban bus stops to detect and penalise improper parking. The initiative, driven by the Mobility department, aims to put an end to a practice that, according to the Council, causes inconvenience to travellers and hinders traffic flow.
The Mobility councillor, Isabel González, explained that the camera circuit is directly connected to the Local Police. The devices identify the license plates of unauthorised vehicles that stop at the bus stops and communicate the incident to the officers in real time, who can issue the corresponding fine for improper stopping or parking.
“One of the common complaints from public transport users, as well as from the drivers themselves, is the presence of cars that temporarily park at bus stops. And they are right,” González stated. The councillor emphasised that this behaviour prevents the bus from approaching the curb, making it difficult for travellers to board, especially for the elderly or those with reduced mobility.
Moreover, as the road cannot be cleared, vehicles behind are forced to wait while the bus loads and unloads passengers, causing delays. “With this system, we want to put an end to this situation,” added the municipal official.
The system has begun to be deployed at stops throughout the municipality, although the City Council has not specified the exact number of cameras installed or the complete implementation schedule. According to the information provided, the circuit focuses exclusively on identifying vehicles and license plates, without recording images of people, in order to respect citizens' privacy.
González acknowledged that “ideally, we would not have had to resort to this system” and that the fine “has always been the last option” for the governing team. However, the growing demand from users and the bus service workers themselves has led the Council to adopt deterrent measures like this.
Data from the Local Police supports the decision: only during the past year 2025, 160 fines were issued to vehicle owners for parking at one of the dozens of bus stops in the municipality. Each of these fines amounts to 200 euros.
With this measure, Fuengirola joins other municipalities that have opted for video surveillance to ensure the smooth operation of public transport and the safety of travellers. The initiative directly affects drivers who habitually park in these reserved areas, who will now face an increased risk of being fined.
The City Council hopes that the presence of the cameras will act as a deterrent and significantly reduce violations. For now, the measure is already in operation, and the Local Police can act immediately on any improper parking detected by the system.
For the residents of Fuengirola who use the urban bus, this initiative represents an improvement in service punctuality and greater accessibility, especially for those with motor difficulties. The Mobility department reminds that the stops are for the exclusive use of public transport and that respecting them is essential for the proper functioning of the service.
The next step will be to assess the impact of the cameras in the coming months and, if the results are positive, to consider expanding them to other problematic areas of the municipality. In the meantime, drivers who park at the bus stops in Fuengirola are subject to a fine of 200 euros, which can be notified at the same moment thanks to the real-time connection with the Local Police.
