About 40 residents of Ronda gathered this Monday in the rain to express their opposition to the alternative route to the Puente Nuevo, a project that, according to the municipal documentation handled by the convening platform, would channel 7,300 daily vehicles into the city through the neighbourhoods of Padre Jesús, Cruz de San Jorge, and San Rafael. The mobilization coincided with the ordinary September Plenary, during which a new administrative procedure related to the infrastructure was promoted, as reported by Diario Sur.
The protesters argue that the new road would transfer some of the traffic issues to residential areas and affect the landscape of the area. "We cannot solve mobility by destroying the landscape and worsening the quality of life for the people of Ronda," argues the residents' platform, which questions both the planned route and its consequences on the daily lives of residents in those neighbourhoods.

From the municipal government team, which defends the infrastructure as a way to reduce vehicle traffic through the monument and improve internal connections in Ronda, they downplay the representation of the gathering. Sources from the Town Hall assert that the project "meets all requirements," including environmental ones, and remind that it responds to a demand previously raised by another residents' platform that rejected closing the Puente Nuevo to traffic and diverting traffic to the bypass without a prior alternative within the city.
"This is that alternative," emphasize the municipal government, which also points out that the action was part of their electoral program and believes it has the support of a large majority of Ronda's residents. The new procedure approved in the September Plenary continues the processing of the route, the execution schedule of which has not been specified by the Town Hall.
