Fuengirola, Mijas and Chiclana de la Frontera receive the Healthy Beach Mention

Fuengirola, Mijas and Chiclana de la Frontera have been recognised as the first municipalities in Spain to obtain the Healthy Beach Mention. This distinction is part of a new project promoted by the Costa del Sol University Hospital, which is part of the Andalusian Health Service.

The programme aims to promote coastal management that favours healthy sun exposure and reduces the risk of skin cancer. This achievement has also been awarded the First Accésit for Best Communication at the 53rd National Congress of Dermatology and Venereology of the Spanish Academy of Dermatology and Venereology (AEDV).

Recognition of coastal management

The Healthy Beach Mention distinguishes beaches that implement health as a key factor of excellence in their management. The model promotes initiatives aligned with the One Health approach, integrating the protection of human health and the conservation of the environment.

The actions adopted in the municipalities vary according to the needs of each locality and include measures such as information devices about the ultraviolet index, posters with sun protection recommendations, shaded areas, drinking water points, sunscreen dispensers, and educational campaigns aimed at the population.

An innovative model for the future

With this recognition, Fuengirola, Mijas and Chiclana de la Frontera mark the beginning of a model that is expected to extend to other coastal destinations in Spain. Additionally, the project reinforces the commitment to sustainability and quality tourism on the beaches.

The Soludable initiative not only aims to prevent skin cancer but also to contribute to the adaptation of coastal areas to the challenges of climate change. The creation of this mention includes a system of indicators to assess the preparedness of coastal municipalities and thus facilitate coastal management and public health.

With the launch of this Healthy Beach Mention, a clear framework is established for other municipalities to follow this path and offer safer and healthier beaches for residents and visitors.
