The 51st edition of the Flamenco Festival Castillo del Cante will take place in Ojén on August 1, a prominent event in the Andalusian cultural scene. The Andalusian Government delegate in Málaga, Patricia Navarro, presented the festival in collaboration with the town's mayor, Juan Merino.
Navarro emphasized the Andalusian Government's commitment to flamenco, highlighting support for peñas and professionals in the sector through grants of up to 5,000 euros. These initiatives aim to promote the creation and production of shows, as well as the promotion of flamenco, considered an essential part of Andalusian culture.
Tribute to ‘Fosforito’ and the evolution of the festival
This year, the festival will pay tribute to Antonio Fernández Díaz, known as ‘Fosforito’, who passed away last year. The event was also attended by significant figures from Andalusian culture, such as the Councillor for Culture and the dancer Fina ‘La Churruca’, who is part of this year's lineup.
The delegate highlighted that the festival has gained great importance over its more than 50 years of history, becoming a reference point for flamenco in Andalucía. “This festival has been the stage for great flamenco figures,” assured Navarro.
Artists and programming
Mayor Merino appreciated the festival's trajectory, which continues to attract a large audience. This edition will feature performances by prominent artists such as Aurora Vargas, El Pele, Israel Fernández, and the aforementioned Fina ‘La Churruca’. Additionally, the traditional Castillos de Oro will be awarded, honoring those who have significantly contributed to the festival and flamenco.
This year's poster, designed by Daniel Espada, includes elements that symbolize the history and roots of Ojén. Tickets are already available, and a large turnout of flamenco enthusiasts from across Spain is expected.
