The Junta of Andalucía and the Spanish Association Against Cancer (AECC) have launched a new campaign in Málaga to prevent skin cancer, under the slogan 'Sun and healthy skin are not incompatible'.
The territorial delegate for Health and Consumption, Carlos Bautista, presented the initiative, which aims to promote safe sun exposure habits among the people of Málaga. The event was also attended by the president of the AECC in the province, Juan Carlos Martín, and several representatives from professional medical, nursing, and pharmaceutical associations.
Focus on vulnerable groups
The campaign specifically targets groups at greater risk of sun exposure, such as children, outdoor workers, athletes, and people engaging in activities in open spaces during the summer.
Bautista emphasized the importance of adopting preventive measures throughout the year, not just at beaches and pools. He highlighted that Andalucía is the region with the most hours of sunshine per year, making preventive action even more relevant.
Recommendations for prevention
The campaign is based on three key actions: protecting oneself from the sun, checking the skin, and consulting a doctor for any noticeable changes. Carlos Bautista recommended the use of sunscreen, avoiding exposure during peak radiation hours, as well as keeping the skin hydrated and dressing appropriately.
The aim is to raise awareness among the population from an early age, with a specific focus on older individuals and those who work outdoors. The campaign proposal also includes the dissemination of informational materials and publications on social media, which will be accessible through QR codes for expanded information.
Additionally, this week, information points will be set up in various locations in Málaga, such as beaches, shopping centres, and parks, where healthcare personnel and AECC monitors will provide preventive information and answer citizens' questions.
According to data from the Andalusian government, the community currently registers a prevalence of 34.39 cases of skin cancer per 10,000 inhabitants, which equates to 1 in every 290 people, figures that are similar to those observed across the rest of Spain.
