The Casa de la Cultura Manuel Delgado Perea in Fuengirola will host two conferences on space exploration on 16th and 17th September at 19:30, led by Valeriano Claros Guerra and Jesús Jiménez Ibáñez, both linked to NASA and ESA.
The Casa de la Cultura Manuel Delgado Perea in Fuengirola will be the venue for two conferences on space exploration on 16th and 17th September at 19:30, as reported by the Fuengirola City Council through the Department of Culture. The talks will be given by two professionals with experience in space missions: Valeriano Claros Guerra, a Favourite Son of the city, and Jesús Jiménez Ibáñez.
The Councillor for Culture, Rodrigo Romero, has presented both events and noted that the initiative aims to bring residents closer to the advancements and projects that define the current state of space exploration. "We are living in a particularly interesting time for space exploration, with new projects that once again place the Moon as one of the major objectives," Romero stated.
The first lecture, titled 'From Apollo to Artemis: NASA Returns to the Moon to Stay', will take place on Wednesday, 16th September. In this talk, Claros Guerra will review the objectives of the Artemis programme and the differences with the historic Apollo programme, as well as discuss the establishment of permanent infrastructures at the lunar south pole, the new Earth-Moon communication systems, and the possibilities of a future stable presence on the Moon for the exploration of Mars.
Claros Guerra is a senior telecommunications engineer and participated from the NASA satellite tracking station in Maspalomas in monitoring the manned Apollo and Skylab missions during his time at INTA. He later took on responsibilities at ESA tracking stations in Villafranca del Castillo, Cebreros, and Malargüe, and since his retirement, he has been engaged in educational work on space exploration.
The second conference, on Thursday, 17th September, is titled 'Manned Space Flights: Evolution, Objectives, and Technological Challenges' and will be delivered by Jesús Jiménez Ibáñez. The talk will cover the evolution of human presence in space, from the first manned missions to the projects planned for the coming decades, and will analyse the technological, scientific, social, and economic challenges of these flights, as well as the current status of the International Space Station and plans to develop permanent laboratories beyond Earth's orbit.
Jiménez Ibáñez is a senior aeronautical engineer with a master's in Physical and Mechanical Metallurgy. He worked at Construcciones Aeronáuticas (CASA) on projects such as the C-212, CN-235, and Eurofighter aircraft, and in 1988 he joined ESA, where he participated in the development and integration of the European Columbus module of the International Space Station and led the engineering and logistics group responsible for that module and the European equipment operated on the ISS. He also coordinated projects related to experiments from various missions, including the Cervantes mission of Spanish astronaut Pedro Duque in 2003.
Both conferences are free to attend and will be held at the Casa de la Cultura Manuel Delgado Perea in Fuengirola on 16th and 17th September at 19:30.
