The AP-7 motorway will remain closed in the section between Estepona and San Pedro de Alcántara until Tuesday morning following a serious accident involving a tanker carrying flammable cargo.
The toll road AP-7, in the section connecting Estepona with San Pedro de Alcántara, will remain closed to traffic until Tuesday morning. This has been confirmed by the concessionaire Ausol, who attributes the measure to the serious incident involving a tanker loaded with flammable liquid.
A 15-kilometre stretch affected towards Málaga
The closure does not affect the entire motorway, but is limited to 15 kilometres towards Málaga. The rest of the toll road is operating normally, as is the Cádiz direction in the same stretch where the accident occurred. According to Ausol, it is expected that traffic towards Málaga will be restored from 10:00 on Tuesday.
The accident involving the tanker, which was transporting flammable material, has caused part of the cargo to spill onto the asphalt. This necessitates taking extra precautions during the cleaning and removal operations, which are what keep the section closed.
Free alternative for drivers
Given the persistence of the closure during peak hours on Monday, July 14, Ausol recommends that users needing to travel from Estepona to San Pedro de Alcántara use the national road A-7 as a free alternative. The concessionaire warns that the reopening will not occur before the end of the morning rush hour, so it is advisable to plan the journey in advance to avoid delays.
For residents of Estepona and San Pedro, the closure represents a setback in their daily commutes, especially for those working along the coast who rely on the motorway to arrive on time. The alternative via the A-7, although free, may experience traffic jams during peak hours.
Work overnight to remove the truck
Technicians from Ausol, along with personnel from the company responsible for the crashed vehicle, will work throughout the night to safely remove the spilled fuel from the roadway, as well as to extract the truck itself, which still contains some flammable material inside. This cleaning and safety operation is the reason for the continued closure of the section until at least Tuesday morning.
The concessionaire insists that this is a necessary safety measure while the removal work continues, and that the rest of the AP-7 road network has not been affected by the accident. Drivers travelling in the area should pay attention to signage and follow the instructions of emergency services.
It is expected that, once the work is completed, traffic will resume normally from 10:00 on Tuesday. Until then, the recommendation is clear: avoid the affected section and use the A-7 to avoid unpleasant surprises.
