The City Council of Benalmádena, through the municipal company Emabesa, has cleaned 10,303 drains between January and August 2026. The campaign remains active throughout the year and intensifies before periods with a higher likelihood of rain.
The Councillor for Cleaning and the Environment, Juan Olea, explained that planning is reinforced in the months leading up to the times of greatest risk of precipitation. He stated this at a press conference where he was accompanied by the CEO of Emabesa, Enrique Moya.
“We are developing ongoing planning that allows us to act throughout the year and especially reinforce cleaning before periods when more intense rain episodes may occur,” Olea noted.
The work includes the removal of accumulated sediments and waste, cleaning of the grates, and subsequent checks of their functioning. The extracted waste is loaded, transported, and deposited at authorised destinations.
The tasks are organised by sectors and generally follow the direction of the drainage basins, from downstream to upstream. For this, manual cleaning teams, usually consisting of two workers, a vehicle with a watertight compartment for solids, specific tools, and signalling and marking means are employed.
The 2026 programme sets two periods of special intensity: one in February and March, and another in July and August, the latter to prepare the network for the heavy rains following summer.
For the last part of the year, the cleaning of another 5,610 drains is planned, with an estimated average output of 66 units per working day. The distribution is 1,452 actions in September, 1,452 in October, 1,386 in November, and 1,320 in December.
If this schedule is met, Benalmádena will close 2026 with a forecast of 15,913 drains cleaned.
“Cleaning the drains is a fundamental maintenance and prevention task, especially in the face of episodes of heavy rainfall, because the accumulation of leaves, dirt, and other waste can hinder water evacuation,” the councillor explained.
Olea also called for citizen collaboration to avoid depositing waste on public roads that may end up obstructing grates and drains.
