The Technical Commission of the Historic Centre unanimously agrees to ask the General Treasury to expedite the procedures to put the building on Lope de Vega Street into service. The Town Hall also demands improvements to the access to the parking, which was committed over three years ago.
The Technical Commission of the Historic Centre of Vélez-Málaga has unanimously agreed to once again demand that the General Treasury of Social Security expedite the procedures so that the office planned on Lope de Vega Street can open definitively. The municipal body, responsible for monitoring and authorising actions within the scope of the PEPRI Historic Centre, held a new meeting focused on the files aimed at recovering population and activity in this area of the city.
The building of the General Treasury of Social Security on Lope de Vega Street has been pending rehabilitation and adaptation for years to house offices. The General State Administration itself at the time tendered for the management services of the works. The Commission believes that its operation would bring activity and a new public service to the historic centre.
Alongside the opening of the office, the Town Hall demands that improvements be made to the access to the parking linked to the property. According to what was conveyed in the meeting, this action was committed and is necessary due to the location of the building within the protected area of the Historic Centre and the integration conditions required by the PEPRI. The City Council argues that more than three years have passed since the intervention was communicated and that access still lacks the planned adaptation.
The mayor of Vélez-Málaga, Jesús Lupiáñez, has defended that the recovery of the historic centre requires action on several fronts and not just the rehabilitation of buildings.
“We want a Historic Centre with residents, with housing, with activity and with services. And to achieve this, we must continue advancing in all those projects that allow us to recover spaces and generate new opportunities to live in the centre”
Regarding the Social Security office, the mayor has pointed out that its opening would help to energise the area.
“We have been waiting for this building to be definitively operational for some time, and we believe it is time to give a new push to the pending procedures”
Lupiáñez has insisted that the municipal request is not limited to the opening of the building.
“We have also asked for the improvement of access to the parking to be fulfilled. We are talking about an action in the heart of the Historic Centre, and we must be especially demanding regarding integration and compliance with the commitments made”
The Technical Commission has also addressed new files aimed at incorporating residential uses in the historic centre, through the rehabilitation of properties and the activation of buildings and spaces. The Town Hall will continue to monitor the projects that depend on other administrations and will demand that all progress.
