The Ronda City Council has reached an agreement with Adif to create a 207-space car park on land next to the train station. The investment amounts to nearly €700,000 and the work will last six months.
The 7,250 square metre site that has remained an urban void next to the Ronda train station for years will be transformed into a car park with 207 spaces. The mayor, Mari Paz Fernández, announced this Wednesday the agreement with Adif, the owner of the land, to launch the project, which includes six spaces reserved for people with reduced mobility.
An investment of nearly €700,000 funded by the Provincial Council
The total budget for the project amounts to nearly €700,000, which will be provided by the Málaga Provincial Council. The expected execution period is six months, during which the cleaning and conditioning of the site will take place, along with the removal of dilapidated structures and remnants of old railway buildings.
As detailed by the mayor, the project includes the renewal of basic infrastructures and the pavement of Avenida de Andalucía, as well as a new security fence regarding the train tracks. Internal roads and pedestrian pathways will also be created, along with new lighting, sewage and rainwater networks, and green areas.
A response to a long-standing citizen demand
Fernández emphasised that this intervention responds to the need for parking in the centre of Ronda and to citizen demand. “This area has traditionally been closed off, with the wall on Calle Córdoba, which will be removed,” she explained. The project also includes the creation of a climate refuge area, although the rehabilitation of the existing building on the site will be addressed in a separate project.
The mayor highlighted that the measure will improve mobility in the municipality, as it will encourage vehicle turnover and enhance a degraded area. “We are ending this urban void and providing a solution to a problem that affects both residents and visitors,” she added.
Residents of Ronda, especially those living in the centre and local merchants, view the initiative positively. The lack of parking is a recurring complaint, especially during peak tourist season when demand for spaces skyrockets.
A strategic car park for tourism and mobility
The new car park will be located just a few metres from the historic centre, making it an attractive option for both residents and tourists. The Ronda train station is a key arrival point for visitors, and having a car park nearby will facilitate access to the centre without the need to use private vehicles on the narrower streets.
The Urban Planning councillor, Jesús Vázquez, pointed out that the project also includes improvements to the urban environment, with the planting of green areas and landscaping that will make the area more pleasant to stay in. “We are not only gaining parking spaces, but we are transforming a degraded space into a useful and attractive place,” he stated.
The expectation is that the works will begin in the coming months, once the administrative procedures with Adif are formalised. The City Council hopes that the car park will be operational before the end of 2026, thus alleviating one of the main mobility problems in the city.
