The Málaga City Council has launched the campaign 'Málaga, free of gender violence' to train hospitality establishments in Soho as protective spaces. The initiative includes the distribution of informative napkin holders and is part of the 'Punto Violeta' project.
The Málaga City Council, through the Social Rights Area, has initiated a new information and prevention action against gender violence. The campaign 'Málaga, free of gender violence' aims to expand the network of hospitality establishments and leisure venues declared as protective spaces and sensitised to detect and act in potential situations of violence or risk.
To achieve this, specific training is provided to the managers of the venues by the Local Police and the Equality Area. The goal is for them to know how to apply the appropriate protocol in cases of gender violence or aggression, as reported by the City Council.
Distribution of napkin holders in Soho
To enhance the visibility of the campaign, napkin holders have been distributed in venues in the Soho neighbourhood with the initiative's slogan and the municipal website noesnoigualdad.eu. This page provides both prevention campaigns and all resources available to women.
In the first distribution, carried out last Monday with the participation of the delegated councillor for Social Rights, Francisco Cantos, nine establishments joined: Rubico, Las Muns, Miss Sushi, Café del Soho, La Pica Soho, El Rincón del Cervecero, Café de Estraperlo, La Guernica Asador, and Standard Coffee.
'Punto Violeta' project and funding
This action is part of the 'Punto Violeta' project developed by the Civic Association for Prevention, which includes various actions to prevent gender violence in nightlife and public events. The aim is to raise awareness and identify risky behaviours.
The campaign is supported by a grant of €18,200 awarded by the City Council, financed from part of the €170,865.10 granted to the City Council by the Ministry of Equality from the State Pact against Gender Violence of 2025.
The Málaga City Council has a Comprehensive Attention Service for Gender Violence, dependent on the Social Rights, Diversity, Equality, and Accessibility Area, located on Concejal Muñoz Cerván Street (Tabacalera). This service is made up of a multidisciplinary team that responds to the social, legal, psychological, and employment needs of victims and works in coordination with other public resources and social organisations.
Any woman in a risky situation can contact the City Council by phone at 951 926 010 and 951 92 60 06, in addition to the 24-hour urgent legal assistance service at 679 661 800. After receiving the request, information and advice on resources and benefits are provided, referring the case to the corresponding service.
Comprehensive care and psychological support
The service offered by the City Council is comprehensive. Social workers are responsible for social care, conducting an initial interview to understand the specific situation of each woman and provide the most appropriate resources. From this care, referrals are made to psychological support services, tele-assistance is managed, legal advice is provided to file complaints and request protection measures, social benefits are managed, or referrals to employment guidance are made.
Psychological support is considered essential for the recovery of victims, as violence within intimate relationships manifests in coercive control behaviours, verbal abuse, or economic control, leading to low self-esteem and increasing the risk of mental health issues. The intervention involves not only stopping the violence but also addressing the consequences generated.
Through an agreement with the Deméter Association, dedicated to intervening with children who have experienced gender violence, psychological support is also provided to the children of the women assisted, with both individual and group sessions.
Regarding employment guidance, the aim is to promote women's integration into the job market through advice on vocational training and employment, as well as support to help find a job and achieve economic independence.
Additionally, the City Council has the Urgent Legal Assistance Service for Women (SUAM) through the phones 010 and 679 661 800, operational 24 hours a day, every day of the year. A team of specialised lawyers provides advice and support to women experiencing gender violence in the moments following an assault and when filing a complaint.
