The Real Fire Brigade of Málaga has declared the preventive surveillance it maintained at the building on Pasillo de Guimbarda, in the heart of the Central District, to be over after the fire that occurred in the early hours of May 25. The fire, which originated in a commercial premises on the ground floor, quickly spread to the hotel located in the same building, prompting the activation of the self-protection plan to evacuate customers and workers.
According to the Security Area of the City Council of Málaga, the fire started at around 1:20 AM on Monday, May 25. Surveillance cameras detected that the initial focus was in the commercial establishment, from where the flames reached the upper floors of the hotel. The quick alert allowed for no personal injuries to be reported.
Precautionary measures and building safety
From the very beginning, the Urban Planning Management of the City Council required the building's owners to implement a series of precautionary measures to ensure safety. Among these was the removal of certain sections of wooden flooring on the roof, aimed at facilitating the complete extinguishing of the fire and preventing reignition.
Additionally, a perimeter fence was installed to protect passersby from potential falling materials, gaps in the façade were bricked up to prevent unauthorized access, and entry was limited solely to specialized technicians. The debris from the commercial premises on the southern side was also cleared, and the building's structure was shored up to prevent collapses.
Local residents have been able to observe the constant presence of firefighters and municipal workers in recent days. Normalcy has returned to Pasillo de Guimbarda, a heavily trafficked street in the historic centre, where both pedestrian and vehicular traffic have been fully restored.
Air quality: no alterations after the fire
One of the concerns of residents and local businesses was the potential atmospheric contamination caused by the smoke from the fire. The Environmental Sustainability Area of the City Council examined air quality measurements recorded by the four nearest stations to the incident site and concluded that "the fire did not alter the state of air quality in the area."
This news has been received with relief by local residents, who feared possible effects on respiratory health. Technical reports rule out any risk and confirm that levels of particles and gases remained within normal parameters throughout the incident.
The City Council has reminded that the property owners must submit a rehabilitation project for the damaged structure, which will be supervised by municipal technical services before any reopening of the commercial premises and the hotel is authorized. For now, the building remains sealed off, and access is only permitted for authorized construction teams.
The swift action of the firefighters and coordination among various municipal areas have prevented the fire from escalating. Tourists staying at the hotel were relocated to other establishments in the city, and the hotel will remain closed until further notice.
