The Plenary of the Alhaurín de la Torre Town Council has approved four red crosses of police merit and nine public commendations for agents of the Local Police and the Civil Guard for three interventions from the past year.

The Plenary of the Alhaurín de la Torre Town Council has approved in its ordinary session in September the granting of four red crosses of police merit and nine public commendations to agents and officers of the Local Police and the Civil Guard. The recognitions refer to a total of three interventions that occurred in the last year and received the favourable vote of all municipal groups: PP, PSOE, Vox and Con Andalucía.

The mayor, Joaquín Villanova, publicly congratulated the officials for actions he described as "very meritorious" and "risky".

"The red cross of merit is awarded for performing, in circumstances of danger to their person, a selfless act or one that demonstrates a high value of the official, bringing prestige to the Corporation or utility to the service," states the Regulations of Honours and Distinctions.

The councillor for Citizen Security, Francisco José Sánchez, detailed during the session the three recognised interventions.

The first took place on 10 September 2025, when a patrol was called to assist a man who had fallen near the ascent to the peak of Jabalcuza. Upon arrival, the officers found the victim lying on a steep, unstable, and slippery slope, just a few centimetres from a drop of between 20 and 30 metres, barely holding on to the hillside thanks to the vegetation. His son was trying to support him from an equally precarious position, without secure anchor points.

Given the high risk of the person falling into the void, the officials descended the slope and manually held the man while urgently requesting the intervention of the firefighters. For several minutes, they bore the weight of the victim on a very small and unstable surface. The arrival of the firefighters allowed them to deploy securing equipment and complete the rescue, which ended with the victim unharmed, although with various scratches. For this action, the intervening agent and officer will receive the red cross of merit.

The second intervention occurred on 3 February 2026 at a home on Antonio Machado street, where members of the Local Police and the Civil Guard intervened with a person who had barricaded themselves in the kitchen after self-harming, as explained by the councillor.

It is expected that both the crosses and the commendations will be awarded during the celebration of the Local Police patron's feast, in an event where officials who have served for a certain number of years are also typically honoured. In the previous Plenary, held in August, purple crosses of merit were approved for two officers for their 20 years in the force.
