The Vélez-Málaga City Council has held an institutional event with a floral offering at the Miguel Ángel Blanco Green Boulevard, coinciding with the 29th anniversary of his murder by ETA.
The Vélez-Málaga City Council paid tribute this Monday to Miguel Ángel Blanco with a floral offering next to the monolith at the Miguel Ángel Blanco Green Boulevard, coinciding with the 29th anniversary of his murder at the hands of the terrorist group ETA.
An institutional event with the presence of authorities
The event was presided over by the mayor of Vélez-Málaga, Jesús Lupiáñez, who laid a wreath on behalf of the entire Municipal Corporation. Also in attendance were the first secretary of the Andalusian Parliament, José Ramón Carmona, along with members of the Corporation and municipal representatives.
With this tribute, the City Council has reaffirmed its commitment to the memory of the victims of terrorism, the defense of freedom, coexistence, and democratic values, remembering Miguel Ángel Blanco as one of the great symbols of Spanish society's rejection of terrorist violence.
During the event, a respectful minute of remembrance was observed in front of the monument dedicated to the councillor from Ermua. On behalf of the Andalusian Parliament, José Ramón Carmona thanked the City Council for holding the tribute and conveyed a message to María del Mar Blanco, sister of Miguel Ángel Blanco and president of the Foundation that bears his name, highlighting her involvement in defending the memory of the victims.
The legacy of the Spirit of Ermua
Miguel Ángel Blanco was a councillor for the Popular Party in the Ermua City Council. He was kidnapped by ETA on July 10, 1997 and murdered three days later, after the ultimatum issued by the terrorist organization to the Government expired.
His murder triggered an unprecedented citizen mobilization throughout Spain, known as the Spirit of Ermua, which united millions of people in defense of freedom, democracy, and rejection of terrorism.
A permanent space of memory in Vélez-Málaga
The Miguel Ángel Blanco Green Boulevard, inaugurated this year by the Vélez-Málaga City Council, was created as a permanent space for memory, reflection, and coexistence. At its main entrance stands a sculptural monolith created by the local artist Francisco Martín, conceived as a tribute to both Miguel Ángel Blanco and all victims of terrorism, and as a symbol of the defense of constitutional values.
For the residents of Vélez-Málaga, this boulevard has become a place of gathering and remembrance, where each year the commitment to peace and democracy is renewed. Monday's event served to remind that the memory of the victims remains alive in the city.
