The festival, declared a Provincial Tourist Singularity Festival, will be held from July 12 to 18 with cultural, religious, and festive events. The major new feature is a handcrafted floral arch that will welcome the Virgen at La Torrecilla beach.
The Malaga town of Nerja is all set to honour its patron saint, the Virgen del Carmen, with a programme running from July 12 to 18. This year, the celebration comes with the recognition of a Provincial Tourist Singularity Festival, an institutional boost that highlights its roots and appeal. The official presentation took place this Monday, led by the councillors for Popular Traditions, Elena Gálvez, and Tourism, Ana María Muñoz, alongside the Brother Major, Daniel Rodríguez.
A floral arch made by locals
The main novelty of this edition is the installation of a large floral arch, handcrafted by local residents. This decorative element will greet the Virgen upon her arrival at La Torrecilla beach, just before she embarks for the maritime procession. The image will travel along the Nerja coastline until her landing at Calahonda beach, a route that annually gathers hundreds of faithful and curious onlookers.
The arch, as detailed by the Brother Major, is the result of the voluntary work of several locals who wanted to contribute to a festival they consider "for everyone." The initiative has been very well received by the Town Hall, which sees it as another demonstration of citizen involvement in local traditions.
"It is a pride to see how people come together to ensure that each year the Virgen del Carmen looks more beautiful," said Daniel Rodríguez during the presentation.
Mass at the Balcón de Europa for the first time
Another highlight of the programme is the mass that will be held on Sunday, July 12, at the Balcón de Europa, at nine in the evening. This is the first time that this iconic viewpoint will host a religious event of the brotherhood, promising a unique atmosphere with the sea as a backdrop. The initiative aims to bring the festival closer to locals and tourists who cannot travel to the church.
On Wednesday, July 15, the Church of El Salvador will host a mass in memory of deceased brothers, followed by a floral offering. On the same day, the maritime market will open in the Plaza de los Cangrejos, a space that will be the epicentre of festive activity throughout the week. There, attendees will find artisanal products and taste local specialties.
Procession, fireworks, and popular moraga
On Thursday, July 16, the main day of the Virgen del Carmen, the day will begin with a mass in her honour. In the afternoon, the image will embark on a maritime-land procession to La Torrecilla beach, where the embarkation will take place. During the route, the faithful will pay homage with showers of petals and the performance of the Salve Marinera. The day will culminate with musical performances and a fireworks display that will light up the Nerja coast.
Friday, July 17, will be dedicated to dance academies, the presentation of awards from the Brotherhood, and trophies from the Fishing Competition. The grand finale will arrive on Saturday, July 18, with the traditional Popular Moraga in the Plaza de los Cangrejos, where sardine skewers will be distributed to all attendees. The music will be provided by the group Las Carlotas, who will set the rhythm for an unforgettable evening.
A tourist boost for Nerja
The declaration as a Provincial Tourist Singularity Festival represents significant support for Nerja, as highlighted by the councillors. Elena Gálvez emphasised that "this recognition values the effort of the Brotherhood and the entire community to keep a tradition alive that defines us." Meanwhile, Ana María Muñoz stressed the economic impact the festival has on the municipality, especially in a month like July when tourist occupancy reaches its peak.
For locals, the Virgen del Carmen is much more than a festival: it is a moment of gathering and collective pride. Tourists visiting Nerja during these days will have the opportunity to immerse themselves in one of the most authentic maritime celebrations in the province of Malaga. And all, with the aroma of grilled sardines and the sound of the waves in the background.
The organisation recommends arriving early for the crowded events, especially the maritime procession and the moraga, to enjoy them comfortably. The Town Hall has reinforced cleaning and security services to ensure everything runs smoothly.
