Nerja has hosted the presentation of the official poster and a historical parade in memory of Bernardo de Gálvez, on the occasion of the 4th of July Festival in Macharaviaya, which this year celebrates the 250th anniversary of U.S. independence.

The municipality of Nerja was the scene this weekend of the presentation of the poster and a promotional parade for the 4th of July Festival in Macharaviaya, a commemoration that this year takes on special significance as it coincides with the 250th anniversary of the independence of the United States of America. The event, held at the Balcón de Europa, featured the participation of the mayors of both municipalities, as well as members of the Order of Granaderos and Damas de Gálvez.

The parade, which traversed the streets of central Nerja, included a historical recreation with period costumes and flags. Attendees were able to enjoy a display of the tradition that each year commemorates the figure of Bernardo de Gálvez, a native of Macharaviaya and a hero of American independence. The poster for this edition was created by the artist Juan de Aragón, who incorporated the most emblematic elements of the festival into his design.

The mayor of Nerja, José Alberto Armijo, highlighted the collaboration between both municipalities for the third consecutive year.

“For our town, it is a pleasure to once again host this parade, which enriches the cultural and tourist offering of Nerja and strengthens the ties between our towns,” he stated.
For his part, the mayor of Macharaviaya, Antonio Campos, thanked the willingness of the Nerja City Council and emphasized the importance of inter-municipal cooperation to give visibility to festivities declared of great cultural and historical interest.

The 4th of July Festival in Macharaviaya is one of the most unique celebrations on the Eastern Costa del Sol-Axarquía, as it commemorates Bernardo de Gálvez's contribution to the independence of the United States. Gálvez, a Spanish military and politician, led the troops that supported the American colonists in the war against Great Britain, and his legacy is remembered each year with events that include parades, concerts, and cultural activities.

The promotional parade in Nerja serves as a prelude to the main celebration, which will take place on July 3rd in Macharaviaya. On that day, at 20:00 hours, a procession will depart from the passage of Calle Carmen, at the lower levels of the City Hall, following the streets Diputación and the Barrio to the Balcón de Europa, where a historical recreation will take place.

The Councillor for Culture of Nerja, Ana María Muñoz, was also present at the event and highlighted the importance of keeping these traditions alive.

“It is an opportunity for locals and visitors to learn about a fundamental part of our shared history with the United States,” she noted.

The collaboration between Nerja and Macharaviaya has solidified in recent years, allowing the 4th of July Festival to gain tourist projection. The event not only attracts residents from the region but also national and international tourists interested in local history and culture.

For those wishing to attend the main celebration, the Macharaviaya City Council has set up a bus service from Nerja. Admission is free, and it is recommended to arrive early to enjoy all the scheduled activities, which include live music and typical local cuisine.
