June closes in Antequera with 28 fewer unemployed, bringing the total to 2,346, the lowest in 18 years. The year-on-year decrease is 10%, with 250 fewer unemployed than in 2025.

Unemployment in Antequera has recorded its fifth consecutive month of decline, with 28 fewer people registered at the SAE offices during June. The total number of unemployed stands at 2,346, a level not seen in 18 years. This figure provides a respite for the local labour market, especially in a month that traditionally boosts seasonal hiring.

Widespread Decline in the Region

The positive trend extends to much of the Antequera region. In Campillos, unemployment fell by more than 20 people, a decrease of nearly 4%. Archidona also saw relief, with nine fewer unemployed, bringing the total to 430. Other municipalities with significant drops include Villanueva del Trabuco (-20), Cañete la Real (-19), Alameda (-14), Fuente de Piedra (-10), and Humilladero (-7). In total, 14 localities in the region saw a reduction in unemployment in June.

Increase in Permanent Contracts

The Antequera labour market is not only reducing unemployment but also improving in quality. June has been the best month of the year for permanent hiring, with over 600 fixed contracts. The services sector leads in hiring, followed by agriculture, construction, and industry. The decrease in unemployment has been almost evenly distributed between men and women, indicating a balanced improvement. For the residents of Antequera, this translates into more opportunities for stable employment, especially in hospitality and retail as summer approaches.

Six Towns See Increase in Unemployment

Not all news is positive. Six municipalities in the region saw an increase in unemployment in June. The largest rise occurred in Mollina, with 31 more unemployed. This was followed by Cuevas de San Marcos (+7), Villanueva de Algaidas (+7), Teba (+5), Sierra de Yeguas (+4), and Carratraca (+1). Villanueva del Rosario maintained its figures unchanged. Despite these increases, the overall balance is positive: more decreases than increases, and a trend that invites optimism for the summer in the interior of the province.

The data, provided by the SAE, reflects a labour market that is slowly but steadily recovering. It remains to be seen whether the trend will hold in the coming months, when the summer season ends. For now, Antequera and its region can breathe easier: unemployment is at levels not seen since 2008, just before the financial crisis. May it last.
