The city of Antequera is preparing to commemorate four decades of flamenco with two consecutive events in the Plaza de los Escribanos. The III Paco de Antequera Guitar Festival and the 39th Santa María Flamenco Night will take place on August 7 and 8, in an event that this year marks the 40th anniversary of its inception, which occurred in 1986.
The mayor of Antequera, Manuel Barón, has highlighted the trajectory of this festival, which he has described as one of the oldest and most established in the province of Málaga. In statements collected by the City Council, Barón emphasized the municipal commitment to flamenco through its specific promotion area. He also recalled that these recitals will be the last in the Plaza de los Escribanos before the start of consolidation works at the Royal Collegiate Church of Santa María.
The programme will kick off on Friday, August 7 at 10:30 PM with the III Paco de Antequera Guitar Festival. The main concert will feature Diego del Morao, one of the leading guitarists in the current scene, who will be accompanied by Fernando de la Morena, Maloco Soto, and Ané Carrasco. The event will be hosted and presented by Paco Remache.
The delegated councillor for Flamenco, Elena Melero, has detailed the lineup for the second day. On Saturday, August 8, at the same time, the 39th Santa María Flamenco Night will take place, led by the singer Pedro El Granaíno, with the guitar of Patrocinio Hijo. Young singer Reyes Carrasco will also participate, accompanied by Rubén Lara, along with the dance of Celia Benavides.
The initiative has the technical and organizational support of the Antequera City Council and the Andalusian Flamenco Institute. Both events are free and open to the public until capacity is reached, as confirmed by municipal sources.
For flamenco enthusiasts, these events represent a unique opportunity to enjoy both established and emerging artists in a historic setting.
