Benalmádena Town Hall has extended the deadline for the execution of the Santo Domingo panoramic lift works to November 14, 2026, a key infrastructure for accessibility to the historic centre.

Benalmádena Town Hall has decided to extend the execution deadline for the comprehensive renovation of the panoramic lift that connects the Costa del Sol road with the square of Santo Domingo de Guzmán. The new deadline for the completion of the works has been set for November 14, 2026, according to the Town Council.

The project, which has a total investment of 279,386 euros, aims to improve accessibility to the historic centre of Benalmádena Pueblo. Of that amount, 246,657 euros come from a grant from the Junta de Andalucía under the MUNITUR programme, aimed at improving accessibility to tourist resources.

The Councillor for Roads, Works and Buildings, José Luis Bergillos, explained that the extension of the deadline is due to "unforeseen technical circumstances during execution," among which a 34-day delay in the delivery of the new lift material by the manufacturer stands out. This is compounded by the inability to simultaneously carry out certain phases of the assembly, as well as the regulatory inspections, registration with Industry, and necessary operational tests before the final acceptance of the work.

Bergillos emphasised that "the works continue to progress" and that the municipal objective is for the infrastructure to "be operational with all safety and quality guarantees." The councillor added that "the extension of the deadline is due to technical and supply issues beyond the municipal will, but in no case does it mean a halt to the works."

The Santo Domingo panoramic lift is a strategic infrastructure for mobility in Benalmádena Pueblo, as it facilitates access to one of the most visited sites in the municipality. The renovation will completely modernise the lift, incorporating new features in terms of accessibility, safety, and energy efficiency.

The Town Hall has assured that it is continuously monitoring the project to ensure it progresses at the best possible pace. Bergillos stated that it is "a strategic action to improve mobility in Benalmádena Pueblo and facilitate access to one of the most visited sites in the municipality."

Residents and visitors of Benalmádena will have to wait until November 2026 to use the new lift. In the meantime, the Town Council has maintained alternative access to the historic centre, although specific routes have not been detailed. Once completed, the work will improve pedestrian connectivity between the Costa del Sol road and the square of Santo Domingo, eliminating architectural barriers and facilitating transit for people with reduced mobility.

The total investment of 279,386 euros includes both the renewal of the mechanism and the modernisation of the structure and safety systems. The MUNITUR programme, which finances most of the project, is aimed at improving accessibility in tourist areas, reinforcing the strategic nature of the lift for local tourism.

Benalmádena Town Hall is confident that, once the supply problems and technical deadlines are overcome, the work can be completed without further setbacks. The new completion date of November 14, 2026, will allow for the completion of all phases with the necessary guarantees.
