The mayor Manolo Barón and the delegate Elena Melero have presented two flamenco evenings on 7th and 8th August in the Santa María square, with Diego del Morao and Pedro El Granaíno as the main artists.
The City Council of Antequera has scheduled two top-level flamenco events for next August. The III Paco de Antequera Guitar Festival and the XXXIX Santa María Flamenco Night will take place on 7th and 8th August, respectively, in the Santa María square, starting at 22:30 hours. This was announced on Tuesday by the mayor, Manolo Barón, and the deputy mayor in charge of Major Festivals, Traditions, and Flamenco Promotion, Elena Melero.
On Friday, 7th August, the programme will kick off with the III Paco de Antequera Guitar Festival, an event that the City Council promotes as a permanent tribute to the Antequera guitarist. The lineup for this edition is headed by Diego del Morao, one of the most recognised flamenco guitarists of his generation. The Jerez native has accompanied great figures such as La Macanita, Vicente Soto, José Mercé, Enrique Morente, Diego El Cigala, and Niña Pastori, and is currently collaborating with Israel Fernández.
Diego del Morao will be joined on stage by Fernando de la Morena as the second guitarist; Maloco, on vocals; and Ané Carrasco, on percussion. The presentation will be handled by Paco Remache.
On Saturday, 8th August, it will be the turn of the XXXIX Santa María Flamenco Night, one of the most emblematic events in the Antequera cultural calendar. This year, the celebration takes on special significance, as it marks four decades since its first edition in 1986.
The lineup for the Flamenco Night will be headed by Pedro El Granaíno, one of the most prominent voices in contemporary flamenco and holder of the Giraldillo for Singing. The artist returns to Antequera accompanied on guitar by Patrocinio hijo. The evening will also feature the performance of Reyes Carrasco, a young singer who has shared the stage with artists such as Pitingo, José Mercé, and Chiquetete, and who will be accompanied by Rubén Lara on guitar. Dance will be highlighted by Lucía Benavides, trained by masters such as José Galván and Antonio Canales. Paco Remache will also be in charge of presenting this second night.
Mayor Manolo Barón has emphasised the historical importance of the Santa María Flamenco Night, which he has described as “one of the main flamenco festivals in the province of Málaga, both for its significance and its longevity.” He also reaffirmed the City Council's commitment to protecting and promoting flamenco, with a municipal area dedicated to its promotion. “Flamenco is a fundamental part of the culture of Antequera, Andalucía, and Spain, and we at the City Council are responsible for promoting it through initiatives such as the Santa María Flamenco Night or the Paco de Antequera Guitar Festival,” he stressed.
For her part, Elena Melero has highlighted the quality of both lineups and invited Antequerans and visitors to enjoy “two magnificent nights full of flamenco in a simply spectacular setting, combining the intangible cultural heritage represented by flamenco with the extraordinary monumental heritage of our city.” The delegate thanked the mayor for his trust and announced that the Flamenco Promotion Area is working on new activities that will be revealed before the end of the year.
Both events are organised by the Flamenco Promotion Area of the City Council of Antequera. The XXXIX Santa María Flamenco Night also has the collaboration of the Andalusian Agency for Cultural Institutions, through the Andalusian Institute of Flamenco, which belongs to the Ministry of Culture and Sport of the Junta de Andalucía.
The performances will take place in the Santa María square, a monumental setting that provides an incomparable backdrop for the evenings. Tickets can be purchased in advance at the box office of the Municipal Theatre Torcal or on the City Council's website. The capacity is limited, so advance purchase is recommended.
