The Town Hall of Torremolinos has been selected by Red.es to create a virtual replica of the city that allows for scenario simulation before implementation. It is one of only two municipalities in Málaga chosen and will receive €1,930,858, 85% funded by Red.es.
The Town Hall of Torremolinos has been one of only two municipalities in the province of Málaga selected by Red.es in the 2025 call for the Smart Cities and Territories Promotion Programme, as reported by the council. The project will enable the development of a digital twin of the city, a virtual reproduction powered by real data about its functioning.
The proposal has been entirely developed by municipal technicians. A total of 52 projects have been selected across Spain, of which 15 correspond to Andalucía.
The tool will serve to simulate situations and check their possible consequences before they occur. Among the planned uses, it will allow for analysis of how a major event would affect mobility, anticipate peak service demand times, or study the distribution of municipal resources in specific situations. This capability is useful in a tourist city where population, mobility, and economic activity vary throughout the year.
The mayor of Torremolinos, Margarita del Cid, has stated that being part of such a small group of municipalities demonstrates the quality of the project and the Town Hall's ability to design innovative initiatives and compete in technically demanding national calls.
"It is especially important to highlight that the project has been developed entirely by our municipal technicians. This selection is also a recognition of their training, commitment, and knowledge of Torremolinos."
Del Cid explained that the goal is to move from reacting when a problem arises to having information that helps prevent it. "We will be able to test solutions in a digital environment before implementing them in the real city," she added.
The total budget for the project amounts to €1,930,858. Red.es will finance 85% of the investment, €1,641,229.30, through FEDER funds, while the Town Hall will contribute the remaining 15%, €289,628.70.
The initiative falls within the realm of Smart Economy, aimed at using data and new technologies to improve public services, promote economic activity, and advance towards more efficient management. The mayor concluded that this tool will help prepare Torremolinos for future challenges and continue improving the city through more modern, precise, and anticipatory management.
