The Marbella City Council is 80% through the renovation of the stairs connecting Velázquez Street with the Coastal Path, featuring ceramic cladding with marine motifs and 50 square meters of new flooring.
The connection between Velázquez Street and the Marbella Promenade will feature renovated stairs in the coming weeks. The renovation work is 80 percent complete, according to the Marbella City Council, and includes the complete demolition of the previous stairs and the construction of a new, wider one, measuring 3.3 meters long and featuring around twenty steps.
The project, which also affects the Coastal Path, includes decorating the steps with ceramic cladding featuring marine motifs and the installation of 50 square meters of flooring. The risers, the vertical parts of each step, are being clad with tiles measuring 14 centimeters long by 18 high, while the treads use concrete flooring in a ochre colour, measuring 1.1 meters long by 30 centimeters wide for each step, as reported by Diario Sur.
The Councillor for Works, Diego López, explained that the intervention aims to "increase accessibility and safety at this entry point to the beach, renew the pavement, and improve the appearance of the surroundings." He emphasized that "with this project, residents and visitors gain in quality of life because, while we improve the connection of a very residential area of the city centre with the Coastal Path and the beach, we also beautify a space that had deteriorated over time and through use."
López indicated that "the project is expected to be completed this month" and highlighted that "this work complements the ongoing project to advance towards a Coastal Path that connects the 27 kilometres of coastline that Marbella has."
This work adds to the comprehensive reform carried out last year on the marble stairs of Arturo Rubinstein Street, also in the West District. In that instance, the work included renewing the access points, installing drains to channel rainwater into the sewage system, and removing planters to prevent moisture, ensuring structural stability and safety in the area.
As part of the goal to connect the entire coastline for pedestrians, the City Council is currently in the bidding process for the construction of the first section of the Coastal Path in the east of the municipality, in the Los Monteros area. This project, included in the Tourist Plan for Major Cities of Andalusia in the City of Marbella, has a budget of just over one million euros and is expected to take four months to complete.
The new section will start from the parking area on Realejo Street, in the La Morera urbanization, heading east, and will end at the western roundabout of the Bahía de Marbella urbanization. The path will be 260 meters long and will include a bridge to cross the Realejo stream. The route will feature a three-meter-wide wooden walkway, a multi-use toilet module, urban furniture such as benches and bins, public lighting with energy efficiency and low light pollution criteria, as well as signage and information panels.
Additionally, the project will involve planting and environmental adjustments of nearby spaces; the conditioning and improvement of beach access, including paths to the sand for maintenance and surveillance teams; and the installation of a drinking water supply along the promenade for future needs at the beach, such as showers or fountains. The project will also include the restoration of the La Adelfa dune, one of the nine areas included in the Marbella Dunes Ecological Reserve, with topographical reconstruction and replanting with native vegetation.
