The Mijas Town Hall has launched a tourist intelligence system with 19 real-time indicators, such as employment, bookings, or arrivals of travellers. The tool, developed by Turismo Costa del Sol, is now available on the municipal website.

The Mijas Town Hall has made available to the municipality's tourism businesses a big data tool that allows real-time monitoring of up to 19 key indicators in the sector. The platform, presented this Wednesday by Mayor Ana Mata at the chiringuito El Capricho, provides data such as hotel occupancy, average room price, tourism employment, or forecasts of arrivals at Málaga Airport.

The resource has been developed by Turismo y Planificación Costa del Sol, an agency under the Diputación de Málaga, and is publicly accessible through the Mijas Town Hall website. The data is updated on a weekly basis, allowing tourism businesses to anticipate market trends and adjust their marketing or sales strategies.

A response to sector volatility

The Director of Analysis and Tourism Intelligence at Turismo Costa del Sol, Rafael Fuentes, explained during the presentation that tourist flows are highly exposed to economic and geopolitical movements. Having constant information, he said, helps to take advantage of positive situations and navigate negative ones with greater assurance.

The tool includes variables such as accommodation supply, tourist concentration in the area, hotel prices, tourism businesses, or forecasts of arrivals at Málaga Airport. For Mijas entrepreneurs, it represents a qualitative leap in decision-making, as they can know at any moment what type of traveller is arriving and what the demand is.

Unanimous rejection of the new Coastal Regulation

At the same meeting of the Mijas Lab – Tourism Cluster, entrepreneurs expressed their outright rejection of the new General Coastal Regulation proposed by the Spanish Government. The text, which aims to reduce the area of concessions and modify exploitation extensions, would directly affect the chiringuitos of Mijas, one of the symbols of its beach offerings.

The Councillor for Beaches, Daniel Gómez, informed attendees about the details of the draft, which was discussed at a meeting in the Senate on June 24. The cluster unanimously agreed to request the Government to suspend the processing of the regulation and resume dialogue with the autonomous communities, municipalities, and affected sectors.

Mayor Ana Mata supported the request and stressed that the tourism sector in Mijas cannot afford regulations that jeopardise the viability of frontline coastal businesses. The cluster's stance adds to that of other coastal municipalities in Andalusia that have already expressed their opposition to the text.

More security and a new partner in the cluster

The meeting also served to address security in tourist areas, the surroundings of golf courses, and hotels in the municipality. Local Police and Civil Guard agents intervened at the request of entrepreneurs to detail the security measures being implemented.

On another note, the director of the Andalusian Centre for Comprehensive Training in Leisure Industries (CIO) Mijas, Raquel Hidalgo, informed the cluster about the agency's contribution to congress tourism. The CIO, with its calendar of events, is consolidating Mijas as a reference for sector meetings.

Finally, the Mijas Lab approved the incorporation of the Caleña Association of Entrepreneurs and Traders (ACEC) as a new native member, represented by its president, Juan Antonio Gambero, and its secretary, Mariana Pérez. The mayor welcomed the group and offered the Town Hall's collaboration to ensure their activities benefit the entire municipality.

Entrepreneurs interested in accessing the big data tool can do so now through the Mijas Town Hall website or the Turismo Costa del Sol page. The platform will be operational 24 hours a day and will be enriched with new indicators according to the sector's needs.
